735 HP + 8 3/4 with stock drum 727 - 08/13/18 02:39 AM

My buddy Mike just recovered from his Hemi's engine failure. First time out with the new motor. If wasn't for bad luck, he wouldn't have any.

Not nice. So is there any way of pointing at the exact part that let go first ?
I am in a very similar boat as him and a little worried.

He has it loaded up on the line way longer than I would ever.

Any idea what happened, Doug? I know the 'we're all gonna die if we run a torqueflite' crowd will be out in force, but usually there is a cause for this, quite often overrevving the car under load in low gear. Any ideas?

He loads it up at the line to minimize R/T on the foot brake. Rear axle broke, killing the low roller, exploding the high gear drum (stock drum).

Same scenario happened with my friends footbrake challenger, except rear gear broke setting off the chain of events. He unwrapped the floor from around his right ankle to get out of the car. This was pre internet and we had NO clue that this could even happen... Chuck Lofgren happened to be at the track racing that weekend and came by to check out the carnage and educated us on the whole deal. Needless to say, we’ve always run shields, blankets and billet front drums in our junk. We also chose to upgrade from the 8.75 in both of our cars. Not cheap to do, but decreases the odds of a failure like this.

Good news!! It’s a great time to change to a pro flight!

Did that once back several years ago at Mopars at the Strip in Vegas, was lucky the blanket kept the damage to body parts to bruised foot, Dana 60, aluminum drum after that day. Lesson learned the hard way

Your picture shows a drum failure, not a case failure. And yes Mikes had a shield, Dented the floor some. My bet is it 'll get an aluminum drum and a Dana.

Once it’s apart let’s see a picture of the cam bore in the back of the case.

Geez, it seems like every other day lately I am saying "I wish someone would make SFI approved cases for 904s and 727s".

However probably too small of a market for it to ever happen.

This wasn't bad luck. It was predictable. I knew from the title what was going to be in the post.

Got it, Doug. That would do it. What a weird thing to happen. In a Dana?
