Carb experts with Hemi crossram intake. - 08/03/18 01:35 AM

I have a Hemi with original magnesium cross-ram intake and new Holley cross-ram carbs. The car starts and idles perfect, good throttle response when car idle in park. The problem. If I give a quick jump of the throttle in gear it sometimes drops down to 600 rpm and comes back up to idle, most of the time it just falls off and stalls. Quick turn of the key and it restarts. What needs to be adjusted or looked at on the carbs to fix this problem? Idle mixture screws are all set at 1 1/2 turns out. Any input appreciated.

Usually in my experience if it falls flat on it's face, it's lean, if it blubbers then dies then it's rich............

Are your carbs delivering a pump shot IMMEDIAaTELY as you crack the throttle?

Yes it does deliver a quick shot. When I start the engine cold two pumps of the throttle, it gives two good squirts and starts right up.

Cross rams have a lot of volume so you might need to give it a lot of pump shot. Pretty tough setup to tune. Lucky for you you're in a good location to find someone who knows how to tune a cross ram. Should be plenty of old cross ram guys floating around the Detroit area.

Are the carbs specific to the engine & manifold?
Do they have power valves?

600? What's your idle rpm? 600-750 is in the good range. Did you open up the throttle blade past the slot? Could be way past and using the main circuit instead of the idle. Are the back ones shut tight?

Turn all the idle screws out (richen) a half-turn at a time to see if it improves.

Good advice and where I usually start. Get a wide band and it's eye opening as to how much affect they have on idle, transition and cruise........... thumbs

The motor pulls 14.5 in/vac at idle in intake and uses the factory installed 6.5 power valve. Normal operating idle is 1000rpm.
