Crane cams rocker screws - 03/09/09 04:14 AM

I need to get a set of rocker arm adjusting screws for the DLI Hemi rocker arms.

I was just going to buy a set of Crane Cams billet screws from Summit, but a buddy of mine says that the Crane ones have issues (soft metal or too hard and brittle).

Can anyone shed any light on if there's a real problem?

I'm planning on running a hydraulic cam (he keeps saying I need to go to a mechanical roller cam).

Crane has had problems in the past, supposed to be fixed but the stories continue...I'd use either Smith Bros or RAS adjusters...

I think the problem they had with the adjuster screws was about 10 years ago, the problem has been fixed.

But Crane is now out of business. There certainly may be some adjusters around, though.

I replaced all of the adjusters on my rockers last summer. The issue that I had was the treads coming off in the area were the lock nut is tightend. I then replaced the thin lock nuts with ARP 12 point nuts. I have done this on both my race engine and now my street engine. This doubles the tread engagement and makes adjusting the valves easier because now there is some nut for the wrench to grab. In the past adjusting the valves always ended with loosing some blood. NOT anymore!!

Recent mopar engine dyno test had adjusters break. This was a professionally built engine. Are these adj from the same vendor that Crane uses?

the usual reason they break is from over tightening the locknut. I broke a few and then was told by a friend to use the shortest wrench I had when locking the nut down . Haven't broke one since

Maybe a different problem than I remembered?
The issue with them several years ago was the ball end was breaking off. What I was told is they were not hardened correctly?

I always place thumb on box end of wrench no matter how long wrench is and is guaranteed to torque same on all nuts or bolts and won`t over tighten,works on long or short handled ratchets too.Old indian trick I learned from an old head when I was a railroad machinist for 12 years in 70`s and 80`s.When it has to be precise use torque wrench.Not trying to be smart alec,just passing on some knowledge that works anywhere but especially where you have previously skinned knuckles.....
