1009 gasket - 07/02/18 06:48 PM

40 over RB.they dont hang over into the bore but they do slightly hang past the bevel in a few spots. is that going to be a problem?

Re: 1009 gasket - 07/02/18 07:07 PM

From what I've seen, YES.

I've used them on 4.375" bores, but there were no remaining factory chamfers on the tops of the cylinders (just a small break on the edge by the machinist) and no overhang in the cylinder heads' chambers.

IIRC, the pics I've seen of 1009 failures could all be traced to the fire ring being exposed by one or both of those conditions.

No idea why they're listed for anything larger than a 4.375" bore, since that's the max I've seen where they can fit w/o some type of overhang issue.

Don't try to save money on the head gaskets unless you're dead broke and fixing an engine on the side of the road so you can get the family to town before the banjos start playing......

I won't use a 1009 on a 4.32" bore or larger. had them burn thru and torch alum heads.

whats the alternative? does FelPro make a oversize gasket?

iagree Check the bore size on all of the Fel Pro head gaskets. up
Cometecs will make any bore size you may need on their head gaskets scope

More than one, but you don't mention CR or deck height or anything else that would help narrow down the choice.

1. The "standard" Permatorque replacementis supposed to have a compressed thickness of approx. .040" and is pretty close to a 4.50" ID. It's not a high-CR type of gasket, though, and most recommendations I hear say not to use much over 10:1 w/ it.

2. The "marine" gasket is the same dimensions as the standard Permatorque, only the construction is supposed to be like the 1009, with the exception of not having the wire reinforcement in the fire ring.

3. There are some dedicated performance gaskets similar to the 1009, only with 4.50" bores. However, those also have compressed thickness of approx. .050", which can jack-up your quench if your pistons are at zero deck height and you're trying to keep it tight.

If you look for something other than Fel-Pro, IMO avoid the Mr. Gasket MLS stuff.

They hung over the chamfer on my 4.350 493. It's only a 9:1 engine so we rolled the dice on their replacement gaskets that come in the gasket set. They were 4.410 IIRC.

At the time none of their other "good" large bore gaskets had .039 compressed thickness. Made a bunch of dyno pulls and it pulled my New Yorker around without complaint.

Have a read of the label on the 1009, it says something along the lines of Chrysler big block "exc" 440 and hemi. I just put some on the shelf and purchased Cometic$

They will burn and torch a slot between cylinders on steel heads also. 4.35 bore, small chamfer, lots of spray, not overhanging.

Never saw that on a package, I read 361-440 exc hemi.

Cometic are the best.I think they also offer several choices on compressed thickness.

Yeah, that's the # of the marine gasket I mentioned above... couldn't remember the part #.

As long as the block and heads have been finished for an MLS gasket. Otherwise you should use a standard style gasket.

its 9.5-1 comp. 0 deck, 4.150 stroker. the marine gasket is pretty big but would prob. work.i will lose some quench with the marine gasket.

Al, I thought that motor was getting 906 heads.
If so, and it doesn’t have quench dome pistons...... there won’t be any quench anyway.

Re: 1009 gasket - 07/05/18 12:09 AM

If you’ll be using open chamber heads, it won’t have effective quench.

Unless the heads have been milled .080 and you’re going to run .020 thick gaskets.
