Pan leak or rear seal???

Pan leak or rear seal??? - 05/22/18 02:48 PM

Anyone devise a way to get a good look at the rear main seal with just the pan off? This with a 727.

Tried a dentist's mirror, but not a good enough view.
Pan did have a spot near the back that didn't get a good seal with Hi-Tack.

I would really like to be sure!!

I know I can pull the main seal cap and do it again, but I worry about doing it upside-down on my back...Arrrgh

Thanks, Joe

If the rear main seal leaks it will have oil on the crankshaft flange flung out onto the converter flex plate, not a little bit of oil, all of it will be on those surfaces scope
A gasket leak, oil pan, intake valley pan and rocker arm gaskets and rear oil galley plugs or cam plug leaks can and have made many mechanics and hot rodders change the rear main seal when it wasn't leaking work
Make sure YOU know where the leak is first before starting to fixing it scope up

Thanks Cab, that's what I expected too, the crank flange looks dry as does the flex plate and converter.

Putting on a new windage tray and oil pan, both Milodon, one hiccup, though.
the Milodon windage try will NOT work with a standard pickup, the opening is not large enough, we needed to open it up some with a Dremel.
Be advised...

Also had to put a bit of goop ("The right stuff") to take up the difference in height between the block's pan rail and the slight bit lower seal housing.

We'll see in a day or so...Thanks, Joe
