FRONT END SUSPENSION CHANGE

FRONT END SUSPENSION CHANGE - 05/21/18 03:59 AM

Planning for a new project next year. M body Diplomat with a 575 HP 440. Will be tying frame together with a 12 pt cage. Just don't know what to do with the factory ISO front suspension. Not interested in an Alterkation swap. I've rebuilt the front end with poly everything and had it properly aligned. Its floating at 120 mph. Coil over and R&P over the factory K? Any solutions? Street/strip.

“IF” I would have kept my J body it would have had a tube k, rack steering and coil overs by now..... that said on the ISO we removed the biscuits and replaced them with steel boxes we fab’ed up. I also dumped the power steering box in favor of a manual unit which provided a little more room for the Hooker Super Comp headers. FWIW I found the Moroso oil pan fit the factory K better, but still required some lip removal from the K.

My 63 has the stock front suspension with just the Comp 90/10 shocks. I removed the power steering and went to manual steering and it has no front sway bar. And it handles great at 124 to 125 mph in the traps. I rebuilt the front suspension back around 2005 and just used all stock parts with new bushings and balljoints. I have most likely only put about 15k on the car since then and the front end it still nice and tight as I checked it at the end of last summer. Good luck with yours , Ron

Add a couple of degrees of caster over factory spec, or at least as much as your adjustments will allow. That will help some. Check your toe-in with the front end raised 1", not at static height.

Maybe I’m wrong here, but did not the M body have the same front mounted torsion bars as the J? Pretty sure they did, especially with the mention of the marshmallow soft ISO K set up.

The F and M bodies were not know for their strong/stiff K. California sued Mopar for the bad front ends of their police cars. Mopar countered with some gussets. Bottom line was the steel was of poor quality and this was the first attempt at a modular front suspension/K.

That's a tuff fix. Those frontends never seem to work in stock configuration and upgrades just seem temporary and maybe not the safest. I'm looking to build a nice track car next after my Charger and cuda are built and will be getting my 3rd Magnum Force suspension for that car. They do offer a kit for you car in tubular or boxed 'Transformer' for you car. If you have the budget for it, would be well worth looking into. I like that it's still a bit lighter than the factory stuff, offers manual steering and has a bunch of clearance for headers.

Magnumforce and Alterkation have restricted front end travel. Good handling but limited for drag strip weight transfer.

I've had no issue with mine after using solid K-frame mounts. car traps 122-123. But they are heavy.
