Help Reid bell to small block

Help Reid bell to small block - 04/16/18 07:11 PM

We are putting a Glide in the car Reid case and bell and have an ATI converter, flywheel with adapter and it's about .300 too thick. I know I'm not the only one doing this. What did you do to make this work. ATI and Reid don't have an answer.
Thanks

No experience with this but how thick is the adapter?

Pictures would help. I’ve done probably 8 different smallblock and big block powerglide setups.

The adapter is .580 thick. The distance from block to face of crank is .600. The distance from mid plate to face of adapter is .410 with converter bottomed in pump. ATI wants .125 clearance for converter .410 less .125 is .285. , .600 less .285 is .315 that's how much too thick the adapter is. It will require milling .315 off face and boring .315 deeper to center on crank. I was hoping someone knew of a .250 thick adapter that would work with the ATI flywheel. I can cut the ATI adapter down and make it work if I have to, but would rather not.

Looks like JW Transmission 80012 crank adapter will work. It is .280 thick and has the same diameter, 2.485 to locate flywheel. I'll find out later this week.

Is that flywheel made for a mid plate?

Ya when you start mixing and matching it gets harder, but do-able. Summit sells a nice starter shim kit that you should probably go ahead and order. He's a picture of part of my mix and match adapters. Some go engine side and some go towards the rear.

Hopefully Mr. Buckner's problem is solved so I will take this a little off topic.

Can any of these adapters be turned around or modified to adapt a SBM crank with a Chevy bolt pattern to a Mopar six or eight bold flex plate? I assume a mid plate or spacer would then be needed between the block and transmission.

Most all of the NASCAR surplus and used premium crankshafts have Chevy bolt patterns.

Thanks,
Bill
