Hood Pins?? Good and Bad ones.

Simple yet kind of important subject.
Are they necessary when the original hood latch and lock is in place?
I spent the extra money and bought a good (glass tech) fiberglass hood and I think I'll need them ???
I'd like some good quality ones but looking for opinions.
Any pics would be appreciated also!!

while it's been a "love/hate" relationship... I have 8 of the Quik-latch assemblies on my glass hood. I absolutely LOVE the clean look of them. It's a bit more difficult to locate them than a slide through pin, but we've gotten the hand of it. It definitely took two people to get them installed and lined up. We spent a good 4-5 hours getting them all to work in harmony.

Those are the same type I use.. the ones I use on the
on my Rampage.. the ones I use are the Mini... I bought
another set to add due to a bow in my hood

these are a mix of the "mini" and one size larger. I actually bought four more as we thought we might have to put one in the middle/front and down the sides, but it's been just fine so far (140... prob more factoring in some headwind days we've had). I will say they do have an alignment tool and I HIGHLY recommend getting one from them. We started in the back/middle, got those two to work smoothly, and worked our way to the corners, then the front.

AEROCATCH, e-bay , 4 on the hood, 2 on the front , 2 half way back. so far good to 155MPH

I've used hoods without pins but they were well braced and made to be run without them. So to me, it depends on how well they are made... but normally I would use them on any glass hood just in case.

I run the unaerodynamic 5" Hemi scoop. 500 runs. Been 151 with 4 Summit aluminum pins. Cheap, light, quick to remove.

Actually one I forgot was the set up I had on the Mirada. It was a hinged steel hood, latch mechanism removed but still had the secondary. We used those Mr. Gasket locking hood pins. Those were simple to install, and clean looking. I just hung the key on the steering column.

I like the look of the Quick Locks.

I would always add pins in addition to the latch on a glass hood.

My reasoning is this. I saw a mustang with a fiberglass hood, hinged, and using the stock latch. It was pretty fast and ran about 135MPH. The latch ripped from the hood, the hood flew up and broke at the hinges. However he had a fuel pressure gauge on the hood. That thing hung on and beat the roof in on the car before it finally broke free. I made a little note in my head when I saw that happen lol poor guy.

We were on a test track out west and we were running
test cars.. my buddy was driving one car and I was
in another.. we were running max speed.. he was just
passing me when his hood popped up.. it stopped on
the safety latch but the car started getting loose..
he got it slowed down but the cooler in back flipped
and it spilled all over and the water and all the stuff
in it came sliding forward.. we were running turbo G-
bodies doing about 130 on a closed road course.. he got
lucky it didnt flip up but the hood had a big bend in it..
when we got back we drilled in a couple of cheap safety
pins and tried to straighten the hood the best we could

The hood on my cuda is a heavy bolt on fiberglass hood from Glasstek. I did not want to use hood pins, just use the factory latch, but the guy at Glasstek told me I needed to use pins. Just not enough strength there to keep it down at speed w/ one latch point.

My old Vfn hood with Harwood cowl molded on was 37lbs.... hood in the pict above is my Unlimited which weighs in at 14. It's got a couple of stress cracks, but for a hood you could see daylight through, I expected things like that. It's "racecar" good....
