Can't Get New CO2 PPP Shifter to Shift

Can't Get New CO2 PPP Shifter to Shift - 04/08/18 09:10 PM

Finally switched out my old Turbo Action Shifter to a clean neutral PPP CO2 air shifter and I can't get it to shift automatically?
I set my MSD 7531 to 2000 RPM just to try in 1st gear and I even come up to 2200 and no GO!
I tried the yellow wire on MSD to one of the MAC Valve black wires and the other black wire to 1st the 16 volt step down and then I just tried it to neutral and still the same thing.
I have 120 psi on my 10oz. CO2 bottle.

What am I doing wrong?
Could I have the wrong MAC Valve?

It's either a "normally closed" or "normally open" circuit. Mine is setup to provide voltage to the solenoid and the other wire to ground. I know that the MSD RPM switch usually provides ground so the other wire would need a 12V source.

Are you familiar with the MAC Valve? There's a #1,#2, #3 port. Not sure where the hoses are supposed to go. I had the bottle hose to #2 and shifter hose to #1 and vent on #3 and that did not work. Air was coming out of the vent.
Then did the #1 to bottle and #2 to Shifter and #3 to vent and this does not work. Yellow wire from MSD to 1 black wire and other wire now to ground and no go.
What can I be doing wrong? Set MSD shift light to 2000 rpm in 1st gear brought revs up to 2200 and held it and it didn't shift.

MAC Valve is 35A-AAA-DDBA-1BA

Do you run a relay, if so which one should I get?

Port #1 is Supply (pressure from the bottle).
Port #2 goes to the shifter.
Port #3 is the exhaust.
Electrical connections should be +12V. on pin #1 & ground on Pin #2.
As a test, connect wire from pin #2 to ground & touch wire from pin #1 to a +12. The valve should energize. If the bottle is connected to port #1, you should get pressure out of port #2.

I understand but if I do it that way where does the yellow wire tie into all of this?
it looks as as I got the ports correct. And thankyou for the reply.

Re: Can't Get New CO2 PPP Shifter to Shift - 04/09/18 03:19 AM

This is just a test to prove that the valve works.
If this triggers the valve, you know the hosing is correct & that the valve will shift positions.
If this test works, then disconnect the valve ground wire & connect it to the MSD 7531 Yellow wire. The MSD 7531 closes the yellow wire to ground at your RPM setting.
Connect the other wire to a +12V supply.

The yellow wire is for the shift light when activated. The brown/white wire is for the rpm/time/pressure switch. Read the MSD instructions as I found this in less than a minute. It is also the ground path as are most so you need 12V to the other wire. Hope this helps!

Sammy, Did your old shifter have a CO2 shifter or did you shift manually? If so, how was it connected to the MSD? Yellow Wire?
Either yellow or brown/white wire can run the valve (close to ground) depending on programming in the MSD.

First time running a CO2 setup. I have no idea what I am doing. I don't understand the (close to ground) statement. I'm new to this.

Just means instead of completing the circuit by sending power to the coil of the valve, it sends a ground. Meaning, you have to wire the valve's coil to get 12 volts anytime the power in the car is on, and the controller sends a ground to activate the valve.

Like trendz said, the MSD connects the yellow or brown/white wires to ground to complete the circuit.
I think you should use the brown/white wire rather than the yellow. Like Dave Hall said, the brown/white wire is the RPM switch & is easier to set-up in the MSD than the shift light output(yellow wire). Do you have the programming software for the MSD 7531?

This will help you.

I see this a lot. You do not need a relay to run the small MAC valve, it only pulls a few milliamps.

The issue is the MSD 7531. It will not fire off the shift light unless it sees the dark blue wire (2 step) activated. It's a programming part of it's internal logic. What I do as a test is hook everything up and turn the bottle on, then turn the ignition switch on. It will try to fire off the shifter solenoid on start up. If it does that it is wired up correctly.

Then just activate the dark blue wire and run it up to the 2000 rpm setting and it will work.

12 volts to one wire of the solenoid, yellow MSD wire to the other.

Is this a 3 speed? If so, use the yellow, do not use the brown/white. You can have different shift settings for the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. Usually, you have the 1-2 3-500 RPM lower than the 2-3

Re: Can't Get New CO2 PPP Shifter to Shift - 04/09/18 05:47 PM

You could use either wire. Know that yellow or brown/white is the ground and whatever unit you are switching with them needs 12V to the other side. So yellow or brown/white to one black wire on the valve, the other black wire should have 12V when the ignition is on. If you use the brown/white you can also shift on time from when the brake is released. If you are running heads up classes, most guys do this. Go into the software and setup the rpm and activation. The 7531 is pretty complicated and requires a bit of delving into because it wants to know how far the rpm drops on the shift so it recognizes it only as a shift and not a problem or a pedal of the throttle. The ignition should be setup so that it knows what gear you're in. Again, the instructions are excellent so concentrate on one area at a time and you will be a pro with it!

I don't run a transbrake so how do I trigger the blue wire?
I was going to run one and have a transbrake button wired but my valvebody is not a transbrake, I went with a clean neutral valvebody, but I footbrake

Put a button on the brake pedal or use the brake light switch if it has the stock wiring

Thankyou Ben very much, I had a transbrake button already wired sitting under the carpet for when I decide to try and use a brake. I hooked it up to my shifter, started it up, backed the car out. Put it in 1st gear, hit the button and came up on the converter to 2000 and it worked. Shifted right into 2nd. Perfect

Thankyou to everyone who helped me with your replys. BTW, the relay diagram was very helpful as well. I might be using it in the future.

Re: Can't Get New CO2 PPP Shifter to Shift - 04/16/18 06:51 PM

Last question, so I can put this to sleep but do you think since I am footbraking, I can tie the light blue line lock wire to the dark blue transbrake wire together to activate the shift light?
I would rather just use 1 button for everything and not have to push the transbrake button separately
Would there be any electronic interference tieing them both together?
