400 block needed lifter bore bushing results. - 03/18/18 06:48 AM

I had my next current 400 block bracket stroker motor assemble and tried to prime it, it has Comp Camss AMC solid roller lifter for pushrod oiling due to this motor having a set of Jesel paired shaft rocker arms on the 440-1 heads. It only had 20 lbs. oil pressure using my old all metal Craftsman 1/2 inch drill motor, normal on every other motor before this has been 80 lbs. using that drill motor work This motor has spray bar valve covers also.
I ended up removing the intake manifold and valley cover and saw oil gushing out of the top and bottom of the lifter bores puke
I pulled the rocker arms and pushrods ad replace those lifters with a set of Crane full body lifters and reprimed it with the spray bar covers disconnected, which resulted in zero oil pressure shock whiney shruggy
I took the motor apart and hauled it up to Somers Machine in Vancouver, WA and had them install bronze alloy lifter bushings with .0020 clearances on their recommendations, they put a .060 oil hole in the bushing in the middle of the stock oil galley. The owner, Archie, ask me how much bushing I wanted hanging out above and below the stock lifter bores and we ended up using +.100 on both ends up
I have the motor back together now and it has 75 Lbs. pressure on the drill motor with the spray bar covers disconnected and connected up
I'm glad this worked out great boogie
My next hope is this new motor will push my S/P Cuda into the 8.70 or quicker E.T. at or above 152.+ MPH luck

Thanks for the update Cab. That is a great before and after report. I knew an old Stocker racer years ago. He said to take the intake and turn the oil pump on almost any mopar engine. You’d be surprised how much oil goes to waste around the lifters. I’ve done it with one motor with oil pressure problems and was amazed. Oil comes out the front of the first cam journal as well. 👍👍

yep, had same problem on my small block with comp roller lifters. Tried cranes $800 roller lifter same thing. Someone told me about the Morel lifters, think it was Best Machine. Tried the Morels and no more massive oil leaks out those lifter bores. My oil leaks were out the bottom of those bores only. Lifter needed a longer skirt to keep the oil galley covered while on the nose of the cam.

This was the second motor I have built with solid roller lifters that had oil pressure problems, the first one was a 1966 Street Hemi block that the driver side oil galley was machined a little lower, closer to the camshaft, than the passenger side was and it would pulse the oil pressure when idling shock I ended up blocking that oil galley off in that motor to fix that problem in the car whiney Don't we love Murphy whistling
Engle use to offer their brand of solid roller lifters that had a longer skirt on the oil galley that helped a bunch on preventing this issue, my deal needed the pushrod oiling on this motor so no go on using the last set of those I have shruggy

Pardon my ignorance, but I was always told rollers needed bushed lifter bores to have oil pressure. Is that not correct?

Not on most of them shruggy
Hemi motors, wedges and LA SB usually don't need them with less than .750 net lift has been findings on most stock blocks shruggy
This motor is the first motor I have used those lifters on also work

Yes on all of them when you are running a small base circle mechanical roller camshaft.
