Pinion is to deep. Pattern is to far into the root of the tooth. Go here. This is without a doubt the best rear end set-up instructions I ever read.
You'll see your pattern on page 15 2nd pic down on the far right.

Pull the pinion out .008 or .010 and see what it looks like.

Move the pinion deeper into the ring gear some more
Not a bunch
Good luck, take the time and effort to get it so you really like it

Are you putting some drag on the ring as you rotate the pinion? Your faint pattern makes me think you are not.

i stuck a big screwdriver against gear for drag. Right now i have the stk .090 and .010 shim i have plenty more to try. Thanks guys

I disagree. Pattern is still to far into the root. Pinion shim still looks to thick. I agree, don't quit until it is right.

I say deeper as well, but op could help by making sure he gets better readable pattern marks. The pattern is looking better with the .010 shim.

Drive side looks much better and is acceptable. Coast side isn't perfect but acceptable. You don't want to sacrifice the the drive side to change the coast. Patterns are acceptable when the pinion wipes off the toe, as shown on the coast, and wipes off the heel. But it's never acceptable when the pattern wipes off the crown or into the root.
Run it.

Usually, using the shim that came out of it to start will get you pretty close, especially with a factory gear, and as long as the guy before you did it right. Actually, the first pics weren't that far off. I said "pull the pinion out .010" meaning to pull the pinion out of the gear, which would require you to reduce the shim thickness. I expected it to be close or a little over center requiring you to put a few thou back in. If I read it right, you added .010, then added .005 more until it was way deep. Then the last pics were with a .075 shim pack which is not deep enough. You've lost the rabbit, not hard to do.
Put an .084-.086 shim pack in it, just to get back on track. It may be pretty close. An accurate read on the pattern requires that you take time to get the backlash and the pinion preload very close to being correct each time. Set-up preload can be achieved by putting it together with no shims, and tightening the pinion nut until the desired turning torque is achieved. On final assembly, put the correct preload shim pack in to get that torque number used in set up. A PITA with a Dana, but you gotta do it.

This is .085. Forget the 75 bearing didn’t bottom out.

Re: Pinion contact thoughts. - 03/27/18 01:55 AM
Drive side is close. I would take a few more thou out of the shim. Coast side is also close but running off of the toe. I would take 3 or so out of the shim pack and open the BL up a few or 3 and see what that does. Pulling the pinion out of the ring gear a few and leaving the side shims alone should open the backlash some.
How are you checking backlash?
Having fun? Yeah, this is how you learn - by trying stuff and seeing what it does. When it starts doing what you think it will do, then you're catching on.

BL is set with a dial indicator. Always fun lol. I will get back at it.

I tried a true .075 and pattern fell off the edge so I went back to the factory shim and started over which to me isn’t that bad. I think somewhere between that and .085 should be good. After awhile it all looks the same to me.

The .080 looks OK on the drive side. I'm looking beyond the teeth you painted to the ones further down with the compound smeared on them. The coast side is still strange except for the one tooth at the bottom of the picture, which looks OK. I would still open the backlash to .010 or so. Most of what I do gets at least 010.
Try using less marking compound. A thin coat comes off cleaner and helps with seeing what is actually going on.

Some of these things fall together nice. Some can be a PITA. Looking at all those pictures, I think I would throw 083 or 084 in it, open the backlash to 10 or 11, maybe 12 if it likes it, and live with it.

Re: Pinion contact thoughts. - 04/01/18 02:50 AM
If I get the coast center than the drive side is way off and if I get the drive center coast is way off.

Re: Pinion contact thoughts. - 04/01/18 04:59 AM
I see that. That last set of pics looks like it's a little deep on the drive side and not too bad on the coast. That's why I was thinking - reduce the shim pack a few thou and put it together. I would still open the backlash some. Are these new? Street car? Are there numbers inked on them identifying them as a matched set? Did they come from a mail order or where?

It’s a used set that I ran in 04 that I changed out for 4.11. They are factory gears . I opened the BL to .010 and it didn’t make a diff. It’s going in a street cruiser no racing

Re: Pinion contact thoughts. - 04/01/18 09:13 PM
Well, that matters. Used stuff is a pain. I was told long ago that when setting up a used set of gears, look at the coast side and ignore the drive side, since the drive side gets all of the wear. It is advice that has worked well for me. Based on that, the first set of photos with a .090 shim has the best coast pattern. Put that in with 8-10 BL and send it.
