Where to install intake cl on this cam. - 02/07/18 09:32 PM

Street car cruise night/weekend warrior.. Heavy 68 satellite. automatic 3500 stall 3.73 gears. 470 low deck, trick flow 270 heads. 10.5 compression. Indy 400-2, tti headers. Cam is mechanical roller 264/270 at .050. .660/.630 lift 112lsa. ground straight up no advance. I know its not optimum but I have it lying around. Would you install intake cl straight up at 112 or advance or retard a few degrees and why. Also have an old isky mech roller 272/272 .050 .630 on a 108. Just want to use what I have
on hand for now. Thanks, Galen

You have to start somewhere...... For me that would be 108.

ICL minus 4° is very common, good place to start, in fact some manufacturers assume you will do this.

110.5 would be split overlap with intake opening and exhaust closing are both 21.5 degrees @ 0.050. I would start around 108 ICL. With your cars weight, mild gearing, and moderate compression the car may run better advanced even more.

I would probably use the Isky cam in your deal and installed it between 103 to 105 ICL, what ever you can get with your timing set up twocents
Those old Isky lobes open very slowly so V to P shouldn't be any problem but check it anyways, of course grin

272/272 is pretty big for 10.5cr, 3500 stall, and 3.73 gears...... Especially when topped by a 400-2.

The 264/270-112 isn't ideal either IMO.

If its really only 3500 flash stall, I'd expect something about 10deg smaller on a 108-110 would be quicker in the car.

^ Being a street car I can see your point but I was unsure if the little more stroke would like it with the 264/270

Thanks for the input everyone. My trans is a tci 6x. gear ratios are 2.97,2.23,1.57,1.18,1.00,0.75. Only reason I am holding off on a new cam is I am hoping to go Holley HP efi. I know that will require a matching camshaft when the time comes.

With 3.73's and a .75 OD an even smaller cam would be prefered for a more favorable cruise RPM, IMO.
