Engine builders using Icon pistons - 01/10/18 08:32 PM

How do the Icon pistons compare to what else is available for common Mopar builds? They sure have a lot of Mopar pistons in their catalog.

I've use several sets on customers and my own pump gas street and strip motors with no problems that stop the build or failed after going into service up
Like anything else, make sure you know what you want and need before deciding on buying and selecting any Hi Po parts, cheaper is not always better work
I'm getting ready to build a pump gas 3.91 stroke 440 motor to sell, it will probably end up with a set of the Icon pistons with the reverse dome, D dish, pistons in it to make between 10.0 to 10.5 to compression ratio with a set of aluminum 440 source Stealth heads up

They might have a few mopar guy's that have worked there for many years...

Can you tell me more about the parts you will use in that build? Are you offset grinding a stock crank or buying a new one? What will you use for rods?

I tried to PM you on this, not possible shruggy
Send me a E mail at cabburge@wans.net so I won't tie this thread up more about the details scope

I'd like to see a current set up close. The ones I had years ago -- and sold before using them myself -- looked OK, but the machined surface on the skirts was a lot rougher than the Ross and CP pistons I have. Also, both the pistons and the pins were noticeably heavier than their advertised weights at the time.

I’m no builder, but I’ve spec’d and assembled a few including my current 451 which uses Iconn’s. They’re flattops with 5cc reliefs and weighed 689g with the pin. 7 years and it’s still in good shape. shruggy

What if I told you I put 30 psi on 440source icons?

Absolutely love them....Been using them for years.

Re: Engine builders using Icon pistons - 01/11/18 04:11 PM

I build 5 or so engines a year. I have used the Icon pistons with no issues. I think the main thing is to ask what alloy the pistons you are buying are made of. the two most common alloys are the 2618 and 4032. If I remember right the 4032 has some silicone added and it makes it a better choice for a street type application where you want a strong piston that lasts. The silicone helps with thermal stability and does not expand as much as the 2618 type pistons. The 2618 alloy is stronger but expands more when hot needing looser clearances, also because the alloy is tougher, it is prone to wear cylinder walls more, is a race application that is usually not an issue, on a street engine you want to last longer it can be.

Re: Engine builders using Icon pistons - 01/11/18 06:09 PM

All Icons are 2618 aluminum. It's easy to find on their website.

The old TRWs and the Speed Pros are all their version of 4032.

Most of the high end piston manufacturers who have two lines of pistons make the lower priced line out of 4032 and the higher priced line from 2618.

4032 has a much higher percentage of SILICON. Like sand. Silicone is what's in breast implants and silicone RTV.

The higher silicon content of 4032 makes it expand less with heat so can be used with tighter piston to wall clearances. That makes it more applicable to street engines which have a large number of cold starts.

Icon pistons, KB pistons, OE Silv-O-Lite pistons, Diesel pistons and Harley pistons. All manufactured by United Engine and Machine. They have been making pistons since 1922. Family owned business, going into the fourth generation. I retired from there in 2004 and wish I had stayed working. A great family and without a doubt the best place I've ever worked.
They were the innovators of the hypereutectic pistons, KB. In my humble opinion their pistons are as good or better than any on the market.

BradH, the rough finish is for oil retention. The weight advertised is for std. size each oversize adds weight.

The 822-040 Icons I had -- despite that they were advertised as being 686 grams + a 141 gram pin -- actually weighed 704 grams and came with a 157 gram pin.

Todd@compitition wedge engines recommend i take a look at them for my 511 build. I did and found a new set for $500. Still have low run time on it, but no issues yet.

Have three sets, quite happy with them for shelf pistons. S/F....Ken M
