"GOOD" shocks?

Every post I see about shocks racers say buy "good" shocks.

Who makes the GOOD shocks?

I have trouble when the tracks get hot, 110* or more.
With 14 x 32 slicks, 4 link, strange DA coil overs I have been told it should hook. I have strange DA on the front as well.

Are the shocks the issue?

Your advice is welcomed.

How old are your shocks? How many passes on them? Are they an off the shelf shock, or have they been revalved to your combo?

IMO if you want a pecking order from what Ive been involved with here goes with what I'd consider buying.

Viking-I have ZERO personal experience with them. I have talked to them at SEMA and know folks who love them. IMO would be an entry level or low dollar alternative.

Strange DA shocks-Good compromise between cost and performance. Strange also can custom valve them for you..

Afco-IMO a step up from the strange shocks and have custom valving available from Afco as well

Koni-Good shocks for the money with lots of options for custom valving

JRI-Kind of on par with Koni in my book with a lot of available options.

Santhuff-Great shock if you need their super stiff valving that they have available.

Penske-Hands down the best stuff out there. Also out of reach of most sportsman racers although they have a "budget" line of shocks too


Then you get into the custom shock guys out there. Menser and Lamb being the two I have experience with. From my perspective if you choose to go with one of them call them and use whomever you are comfortable with. I will tell you one is a good deal more $$ than the other. But has a larger cross section of experience Id say.

IMO for what you have you should be able to make it work with those shocks for sure. Strange does offer rebuild and revalving service as well. Id start with a call to them if you think there is a shock issue. Video goes a long way to diagnosing these types of issues.

They were revalved stiffer about 6 years ago.I will call strange and see what they think.

Thanks Al. I will call strange. Shocks were re valved stiffer about 6 years ago. Could they be worn out?

July 2016 on a well prepped track I went tighter with ext until it wouldn't hook.

Ended up on #6 ext. with a 1.248 60'.
Runs before that I loosened front ext to 2 from full soft. It definitely hooks better with soft ext on front.

Track temp was low but it was when I could test.

Also FWIW My IC is 50" out and 7.25" high

Wheelie bars are 10" and 10.5"

What do you all think of the set up?

OOps I looked it up and the shocks were revalved 10 years ago!

I'm going to send them back to strange soon. Rebuild, test and test springs also.

10 years is a loooong time on something the goes low 1.20s. Pay attention to free length on the springs. Saves time. If a 12" spring measures 11 7/8", it goes in the can.

How do you transport the car? How do you secure the car to the deck?

We wore out a fresh set of rear back shocks this past summer towing to Chicago from the West Coast. The morale of that story is they take a lot more punishment in transport than at the track.

If your car is not performing as it did once and no real power changes were made then its a pretty good indication something in the suspension is not happy. That's where I would start

I'm going to change or add chassis tie downs in addition to strapping it to the housing.
