Remote WP legal for Super Stock class?

Remote WP legal for Super Stock class? - 03/02/09 02:45 AM

Is a remote water pump legal or does the water pump have to be bolted to the block in the stock location. The rules don't seem to be super clear on the subject but I haven't seen anyone run a remote pump so I'm guessing they aren't allowed.

Reason I ask is that I've been trying to get a standard electric water pump to clear the belt drive distributor. Some guys space them out about 3 inches to clear but I'd rather not do that. If a remote pump is legal then the job is easy. If not then I think what I've come up will also work.

Anyone have some current Super Stock motor pics? I looked in the SS/AH thread but mostly just found guys talking smack and not much info.

From what I've seen at the track lots of guys have switched to the belt driven distributor but there didn't seem to be a consensus yet on how to deal with the water pump.

Cannot be remote. "Electrically driven fans and water pumps permitted. Water pump must bolt on with no modifications to block."

2009 NHRA Rulebook, Super Stock rules.

Look at Meziere.com. PN # 307 is specifically designed for BB Mopar with a front drive.

I've used the #307 pump, in fact I designed up the brackets that allow it to work with the Jesel distributor. But I've found out that some guys don't like running reverse flow systems since they can trap air bubbles in the heads.

I'm now working on a way to run the standard electric water pump with a Jesel distributor. The picture I posted originally is one way to do it but a remote pump would make the job even easier.

That NHRA rule book wording is very vague. It doesn't say where the pump has to bolt on for instance. How about the pump bolts to the motor plate and there aren't any block modifications? Seems that would meet the wording of the rule.

Andy, most of the pics I have are standard distributor placements. Barton is trying to figure out a way for that waterpump/ frontdrive distributor problem also.

Trust me, that's what the wording means. If you show up with a water pump not utilizing the stock mounting locations in some form, you will get tossed. The vague wording gives them the leeway to bounce you if they don't like the intention of the application.

The best way to really get an answer is to call your Divisional office and ask the Tech Director.
If you're in Oregon you could just call D6, or I would call D1, they are the Stock/SS directors.

That would be Dave Schaffel. Good guy, knows his stuff. If he said its legal, It'll pass.

Here is the basic idea. The hot water exits out the #16 lines on the top of the blocks. The thermostat opening is blocked off so the top level of the water pump now just provides a loop for the water from one side to the other.

Yeah, I've done that trick before too!

So the water-pump has to be mounted in the stock location, but the dizzy doesn't, now that makes a lot of sense....

That seems to be the way the rules are written. I'm not even sure if a distributor is required. At some point people will start to run coil-on-plug with these motors if it is legal.
