Camshaft opinions please: a bit long

Roughly 20 yrs ago I spent some time with a local speed shop owner looking to purchase a then newer technology camshaft for my old gasser which I'd been running as a bracket car since the early 70's.

For all those years prior I'd been running a solid lifter Lunati with a ton of duration.

The speed shop owner steered me toward a Lazer cam, saying he'd had good luck with the company, which was apparently a newer start up at the time. I'd filled out a rather lengthy input sheet and a few weeks later had a new cam with solid lifters.

Anyway, the cam got installed and broken in, but then for a whole host of reasons I ended up storing the car without ever running it outside of the driveway.

Over the past year I've been working to get it going again. Time to relive my youth I guess.

Which brings me to this request for opinions:

Cam specs: Duration @ .050 261 (both intake and exhaust)
Seat duration @ .020 295 (both intake and exhaust)
Lobe separation 108
Gross valve lift 552 (both intake and exhaust)
Valve lash hot .026/.028 intake/exhaust

Car weights 3400 pds. 426 wedge with stock 906 heads, 12.5 TRW's, 750 Holley on Torker intake, 727 with 3400 stall, 4:56 gears. Everything on the car is old school.

What do you think of the cam recommended to me? In retrospect I had always been under the impression it was beneficial to run a bit more duration on the exhaust side.

Not looking to run against SS/A cars, just hoping for a solid bracket car which will likely only hit the track 3-4 times a season.

Am I wasting my time? Headed for frustration? Thanks in advance for your thoughts and wisdom!

I'm not a fan of dual pattern cams. Run it.

It's a little low on lift for me but nothing wrong with it.



Edit: you probably need more converter.

Go run the car the car the way it is now and then, if you don't like it, change it later
You could always tighten up the lash to see if the motor wants more duration and lift or not

Just out of curiosity, what were the specs on your old Lunati cam?

Run it, X2 on the converter.

I agree on trying less lash. I would start by tightening the exhaust by .010 to .012 to see if it likes it. The converter is a bit tight, but the cam isn't so radical it won't work ok. I wonder how this cam would respond to Beehive springs and higher ratio rockers, just a thought. If you have old super stock rockers, some were short on the stated 1.5 ratio I believe, might as well check them and see.

If it hasn't been run yet, or tested to see what the converter flashes to, then the "3400 stall" really means nothing.

That being said its probably going to want more like 4500-5000 flash stall.

The old Torker definitely leaves some power on the table.

There are a couple of Holley SD intakes for sale in the Moparts Engines section, I think an M1 single plane too.
Either of those will be an improvement in power.

However, if you really only have something like 3400 flash stall now, and you don't plan on changing it, keep the original Torker..... They have better bottom end than either the SD or M1.

The cam seems okay to me.
I'd start out at the recommended lash first, then you can try tightening it up a little at a time if it seems like the motor is responding favorably to it.

The Lunati was 520 lift and 320 duration on both sides. I always felt it was a little sluggish at launch, but it had a great top end charge.

Thanks everyone for the great input. Having read through all the good suggestions I realize I've probably been over thinking this and need to get back to the basics.

Gotta get new valve springs ordered as I've concluded I don't want to push my luck with springs that have been in the car for 30+ years.

It's only November and I'm already thinking spring can't get here soon enough.

Little low on lift, but your heads should make that okay, as a stock port isn’t going to do much with any lift past .550 anyways. Run it and have fun. Great to hear you’re getting an old friend back out for some fun.
