Best method to jig up rear to weld spring pads? - 02/28/09 09:55 PM

I've got my 8.75 out and have my Dana setting in the springs. I'm wondering what the best method to weld the spring pads on the housing is. Do I weld them in neutral and add pinion angle after the fact? Or do I try to get the car at ride height with weight on the rear axle and drive shaft in to get the desired angle, then weld them. What is the preferred method?

That's the way I did them on the last car I had leaf springs on.

I am just in the process of doing the same as you, i've also made new front spring hangers.
I have tack welded mine on with a small amount of nose down, i'm going to fit the wheels then drop the car onto the deck check the pinion angle and if it's not right i'll raise it up drop the wheels off, break the tacks, adjust it,weld them solid and put it back together.
What width is yours, mine is 52", so i will need new wheels as my 8-3/4 was stock width, i used c.lines with a 7-1/4 b.s

The second method is what I did after centering it side to side and left the u-bolts just loose enuff to adjust pinion angle then spot welded em then had my buddy full weld em and box em in solid. Now whats wrong w/the sturdy unbreakable 8 3/4?

Everyone is correct,Set the car at ride height, center the rearend side to side, set the pinion angle, lock it down with the u-bolts and tack weld the spring pads.Remove the u-bolts and complete the welds.
