I am sure it can be done. I adapted a quick release to the wood grain wheel on my 70' Challenger. I even reused the quick flip seat belt buckle for my window net release as well.

Mine has a splined hub welded to a 2.5" washer that has 3 holes that bolt to the factory mount under the black cover. The center is held on by a shanked lug nut trimmed at the top to fit under the steering wheel center.

I used the hex shaped quick release on a stock b body column.
had to trim the upper housing with a saw for clearance.
Slid the adapter over the column, drilled a hole and pinned the bottom 'cause I didn't want to weld near the column bearing. At the top I screwed on a stock lug nut, which centered the hex shaped adapter, then welded nut to adapter and threaded shaft to nut. Has held up to road-course use with manual steering since 1995.
