W2 360 cam suggestions please!

W2 360 cam suggestions please! - 10/28/17 11:24 PM

Hi folks. I am bolting together some parts I have accumulated through the years. This is going to be a budget build utilizing as much of the shelves in my garage as possible.
I am starting with stock stroke 360, not looking to build a stroker as the short block is very low miles wilt decent parts.

What I have:
stock stroke 360 w/ flat tops
Heavily ported W2’s
Holley Pro dominator tunnel ram

What I need help with:
camshaft (thinking solid flat, looking for suggestions)
carburetors (thinking eddy’s, again open to suggestions on size and make)

Engine will end up in an A-Body, 3.91 gears and auto.

I would like to go solid flat tappet for cam.

Basically looking to build an old school budget street bruiser that will see the odd day at the track.

Thanks in advance!

I like and use comp Cams, for your deal I would look at their part #20-616-5 ,grind #fl272B-6 or the next bigger one Pt #20-635-5, grind #XTQ281S. I would install either one on a 101 to 103 intake lobe center and go have some fun devil up twocents
All the SB I've built and help the owner race like the close LSA and advancing the intake lobe opening from 3 to 6 degrees closer to TDC from straight up up
As far as the carb size and part numbers your on your own with the Eddys confused If you had access to a pair of Holley 1850 I would use those in a heart beat, or maybe a pair of Holley 600 or 650 CFM D.P. work
I'm a drag race guy, so keep that in mind shruggy

No mention at all of what convertor you will use, nor expected compression.
Without those, no way to spec a cam

Heavily ported doesn’t mean dog poop without flow numbers

B3422W5, I figured there has been enough w2 headed pump gas 360’s built that it would be fairly easy to get a few suggestions.
I have not taken the approach of choosing a camshaft based on what torque convertor I am going to use...heck, I may use a four speed.
But thanks anyway for your feedback.

Pittsburgracer, I’m not sure on the flow numbers and to be honest, I have no intention of taking them to have them flowed.
The heads were purchased from a member here on moparts. They worked very well for him. They were ported by a fellow by the name of Jimmy Bell. That is about all I know.
Either way, was simply looking for some real world suggestions. I thought if any place, this would be where I could get that.

Why I asked is although the W2 is and can be a fantastic head it peaks funny. 260@.450 and drops like a rock. Proper work and it’s 300 plus easily

Now you see why all the great people who used to post on here stopped due to all the BS that goes on here he was asking for a little help and all you want to do is give him some bs story about flow numbers like he said there are alot of 340 360 W2 motors out there id run something in the mid 250 intake low 260 exhaust worked great on my old W2 setup or something like Dons 360 260- 266 Howards cam

R3DART,

i'm in the process of building a stock stroke 360 with W2 heads. my heads were ported by Jesse Robinson known as RAMM on this site.. they flow 286 cfm.

i'm going to run a solid flat tappet cam. Hughes Engines grind #, STL6468AS. 615/621 lift with 264/268 dur @ .050.

i will use a Victor 340 single plane intake. compression will be at 13.1.

i have used a holley pro dominator tunnel ram in 2 different builds. 360'' and a 440'' SBM stroker. i ran 2 650 holleys.

Your right and I’m sorry. I will never try to help again. Pick up the slack for use please.

The more I think about it Scott I will give myself a short vacation. Now I’m kinda sorry I grabbed those Summit discount coupons this week at the Halloween Classic for our members. If anyone needs one check out some other mopar sites or Yellowbullet. Maybe Scott will contribute some

If the heads work really good, the TR will push your rpm range up quite high...and unless the valves your using are really lightweight, you may run into high rpm problems (above 7200rpm).
Yes you can run higher pressures, up to a point though...just alot going on with poor tappet angle, largely offset rockers and heavy valve train.
Solid roller would be my recommendation...is this on pump gas?
If so, then solid FT might work as rpm peak will be a bit lower with lower compression.

Brian, thank you for the response.
What you are saying makes sense.
I really would like to put that old tunnel ram to use but looks like just to much of a mismatch for what the bottom end will take.
The heads came with a port matched strip dominator. Looks like the TR will stay on the shelf for a while.
Yes, it is going to be a pump gas engine. Open chamber W2’s and flat tops are what I have.

Buy the correct cam for a TR and it won't turn any more RPM than it will with a single 4. And the TR will make more bottom and mid power.

I have Non worked W2 econos on a 10.5 340, and it's pretty happy with this old purple shaft, "653" last of the part #. It measures .528/284/112. Summit still has it but it's expensive. I ran across it just today while helping pick a mild SB cam for a friend. This cam is happy with a 10" converter and 4.30's. Its been running 12.30's for a couple of decades now.

A cam that worked pulled strong in my 12:1 340 was a sig erson solid flat tappet. 258/258-.580/.580-107 in at 107. I had a 4 speed at the time with 4.10 gears.

Was about to post something similar but more exact. Cam does not really dictate max rpm power potential at all. That is all in the induction. Everytime I've used a TR it has lowered RPM peak HP and torque comes up across the board. J.Rob

I have a solid roller in a 360 that had ported edelbrock heads on it. It was a Reed Grind 258@.050 and .650ish lift IIRC. It went 11.16@119.5 on pump gas at 3500LBS.

I just had a Holley Pro Dominator W2 Tunnel ram converted to EFI for my W2 headed 416. I plan on starting next season with it.

Then your tuned length is better suited for lower rpm!

Off topic, I know.......

As an example of how the engine combo, and the particular TR being used can impact the results:

540 big block(4.375x4.500) with ported 440-1's and a 281/292-112 roller cam......
Indy 440-2 w-2" 4500/4150 adapter and 1150 carb:
Peak tq @ 5300, peak hp @ 6800

Indy TR with 2x non-hp 4500 1050's on it:
Peak tq @5700, peak hp @7300(end of the pull)

Peak to peak the TR was 20ft/lbs and 33hp better.
At 7300 the TR was 54hp better.

Tested back to back.
