Fired up the engine today

Fired up the engine today - 02/27/09 12:14 AM

I fired up my race engine in the Dart for the first time this year. It was a cold February, but it got over 50 degrees today, so I fired it up after work. It felt good to see it go without a hitch. The only change from last year was I freshened the transmission and converter.

No changes, yet. Just fired it up to circulate the oil, warm up everything and put the race oil in for the upcoming season. The local track opens for testing Mar 7 (weather permitting), and the regular bracket races start the first weekend in April.

Now I will take the carburetor setup off and put this Ron's Flying Toilet injection system on for this year. I plan to test with methanol (race alky) for March. At some point when summer grade E85 is available, I plan to recalibrate the system for E85.

Can`t wait to hear the results. Curious; how often do you freshen a converter and what does it consist of. Thankxx Jim.......

This is the big toilet, 4.1" rated 1800 cfm!
I think the 511 CID will like it. It really liked the Dominator carb compared to the 950 carb (small venturi).

From Ron's web site:
Quote:

Flying Toilet throttle body is slot-machined to fit a 4500 (Dominator) or 4150 (Holley) flanged manifolds.
3-3/4" 1240 CFM
4" 1435 CFM
4.100" 1800 CFM

The smaller throttle body (3-3/4" - 1240 CFM) is reserved for 327 to 383 cubic inch engines where the owner has no plans of going bigger in cubic inch in the years to come. This throttle body typically is utilized with a "0" pump and .029-.035 nozzle jets.

The middle throttle body which is the most popular by far is the 4" version (1435 CFM). This has a wide span of cubic inch compatability ranging from 355 to as much as 502. This throttle body can work with a "0" or "0-1/2" pump and .032-.037 nozzle jets.

The biggest throttle body comes in at 1800 CFM (4.100") and is set aside for the bigger cubic inch/higher horsepower applications. Engines from 421 to 572 cubic inches can put this throttle body to work. Typically this throttle body will be mated with a "0-1/2" pump that will feed approximately 1000 HP with as big as a .040 nozzle jet.

I am not the man to answer that, it is a topic on its own. But I don't normally do it for years...

Curtis, what improvement did you see on your car? What did you change from, and what size engine?

I am sure you are itching to get out there and run it. One of those issues with Winter I suppose. Looking forward to hearing how the toilet works out as well. Good luck this year.

Re: Fired up the engine today - 03/09/09 01:15 AM

Well, it went from a snow storm to 70 degrees this weekend. So I put the flying toilet injection system on the engine and fired it up. This was with race alky (methanol). It went well. No leaks, no problems. I took some Air/Fuel ratio measurements with my LM-1 while in the garage, and it looks to be in the ball park, ready for tuning at the track. I even did some foot braking to see how the A/F ratio changed with throttle position and some load. The real test is running WOT down the track.

A nice day with some accomplishment and no problems. That makes me happy.!

And yes, the burning alcohol fumes in the garage are terrible...
I plan to switch to E85, much cleaner burning. But that might not be for a couple months of racing. I added collector extensions with turn-outs, so the fumes during the waterbox burnout etc will not be under the car. But in the garage even with a fan blowing out... burns the eyes.

Bet you are getting anxious to get at it now for sure. I have always wanted to run a Terminator system just never done it. Guess I am scared of em. Cant wait to hear the results.

Congrats Jim, can't wait to see the results.

I gotta admit, I dread being next to alcohol cars in the staging lanes, I've often worried about dying while waiting our turn to move up. LOL
