How much is a tenth in ET worth to you?

How much is a tenth in ET worth to you? - 02/26/09 05:53 PM

How much are you willing to lay out for each extra tenth off your ET? If it cost you $1K to switch to a roller from a solid cam and you get .2, is it worth $500 / tenth? If you put on a set of CNC heads that get you another .3, is it worth $1000 / tenth? Where do you draw the line?

I'm just a bracket racer but I love chasing e.t. and getting as much out of my car as possible. If I was to pick up a tenth I'd run a 5.96 in the 1/8th and that would be sweet. I'd spend $500 for that easy.

I put out about 50 grand for 2 tenths but still hoping for another tenth or so-and still spending.

Maybe I shuold ask how fast are you going and how much are you willing to spend to go a tenth faster.

Re: How much is a tenth in ET worth to you? - 02/26/09 06:45 PM

it kinda depends on what tenth it is ie. 10.8 to 10.7 not a whole lot but 10.0 to 9.90 yes

Cost Vs ET gain is directly proportional to the current e/t your running.
The faster one goes for every tenth gained, the next tenth gets more difficult.

I tried my best to pick up a few tenth in the dragster I ran but picking up 4-5+ mph at that rate takes well over 100hp to see these gains. Not easily accomplished, by even cam changes etc, especially when your already running max effort stuff. Im sorry, switching carbs, intakes, headers, cams, timing changes, tuning stuff. Not one single thing alone would get you the gain needed. More than likely all the things needed to see good e/t gains. So in my case several thousand dollars would may or may not see some return at the strip.
Where as uncapping the headers, jetting, timing changes could net 1/2 second e/t going much slower, dollars spent..maybe zero.

I spent 20k for 1 sec to go from 9.90 to 8.90. That's about 2k per .1

I dont think its allways a money thing , Ive seen lots of low dollar 8k engines run faster than 20k riggs , Just depends on who is wrenchen on them

I think backwards... I always think, make it lighter,
cost less in most cases and is usually easier on parts

For my Cutlass going from a 16.7 @ 80mph (bone stock 2bbl 350, with 170K miles). The new mill is running about $800 total

I'll let you know this season

Re: How much is a tenth in ET worth to you? - 02/26/09 10:46 PM

It's too bad the cost to gain ratio isn't linear. A tenth to me is worth whatever I can divert from other expenses. Which brings to mind the absolute cost saving miracle of nitrous. There's nothing that will buy a tenth faster, easier, or cheaper on almost any application. I'm an N/A guy now, but if I had to have a tenth that would be it.

Well, I just spent $900.00 and picked up a tenth over my previous best but, I know I`ll see a bit more. I know guys who have spent $4,000-$5,000 on transmissions to get a couple.

Re: How much is a tenth in ET worth to you? - 02/26/09 11:14 PM

In my case ,a tenth would do nothing for me. 10.80's right now. I need a cage, belts, and some other small things to be "legal" No more racing. Easy tenths include , but not limited to ..
#1 less weight
2 balancing of engine
3 trans efficiency
4 headwork
5 carb efficiency
6 proper gearing
7 proper tires
8 proper suspension tuning
9 proper intake/head/carb matching
10 efficienct driving
11 FireCore50 Ignition Wires

There are a lot more , in-depth things, but I think these are all important.

I'll second this. Hey, they got me my 12.

Heck, the cheapest tenth I ever got was bolting on a carb spacer that I already had. Though it's pretty easy to pick up ET when you are as slow as me. lol...

when you say a tenth, are we talking 1/4mi. or 1/8mi. believe it's a lot easier to gain a tenth in the 1/4. don't think i'm a jerk, but it's a lot cheaper to get that tenth with your brain than with your wallet

I run 11.0's in my Duster, but I know my girlfriend would pay big money for a 10.90 if it meant me losing 100 pounds!

I know how you feel...
I have gotten 1 5.97..and several 6.00 and 01's....

So to answer the question...I bought a 2800 advance clutch to put me in the 5.90's solid instead of the 6.0's...It weighs about 4-5# less than my single 10" clutch..

Re: How much is a tenth in ET worth to you? - 02/28/09 12:50 AM

In a performance-based class such as Pro Stock, Comp, SS and Stock, many thousands are spent for hundreths, with no guarantee.

In bracket or index racing, the key is consistency, not new bests. Having said that, though, it is always gratifying to squeeze a little bit more out of your junk.

If you are a career test-and-tuner that goes to the track only to chase new bests, well, good luck with that.

Re: How much is a tenth in ET worth to you? - 02/28/09 12:57 PM

Tenths are or were fairly cheap when i started racing .Pull weight out of car first, gears changes, convertors that was to get to that majic
11.90s in early 80s.
MID 10s with stroker motor under $6000.00
last year alum heads ported $3000.00 10.13

2009 new motor cost ???? 9.80s

SO when you get to a low 10s ,9s a tenth will cost well over $1000.00 if it works
and 8s will cost $3000 for a tenth

And when your their doesn't matter mopar, chevy. ford they are good pieces and cost is equall.

Now ask how much most of us have spent since we started into cars and racing 1977

it started as this.solid cam[.559]low boost[6lbs]to the current state for 10.40 and under with a roller and A/W intercooler.if you plan your pulley % over/under just 2 pulleys gets you street and race with a top to bottom swap[9% O/U drive]pulleys are 125$ new. [image][/image]

I'm probably looking at about $1000 a tenth, if I upgrade to a set of Chapman CNC Stage VIs.

Wow... that sounds even more insane when I see it typed out.

Ummmm...I dont wanna know. At the ET and weight I am at I think a tenth could cost me easily $4-5K. In my case nitrous is not an option right now, might address it at the next freshen up but not sure I want to give up the NA ET to get it.

Ive "swapped" more parts than bought new stuff over the year....kind of...... Id LOVE a Tenth!

and my car ran the exact same as it did the year before.

tires, advance cam, new fuel system, different carb, shocks, tranny, rearend, endless tuning, etc..

Theres still one thing i havent changed yet (hope to soon) .............. the converter .

A tenth for me is really simple, and cheap, whenever I want it... Turn up the boost...
