440 #1 main bearing difference

440 #1 main bearing difference - 08/26/17 10:13 PM

I'm putting together a '70 440 and I read this in the Plymouth service manual.

When I look at my new bearings, Federal Mogul, all 4 of he uppers look identical and I don't see a chamfer as noted in the manual that would be the #1 upper. No red mark either.
Should I just assemble and not worry about this??
I looked at the old bearings that came out of the engine, non-original clevite, and I don't see a specific chamfer on 1 of them either.
Any thoughts and comments would be appreciated.
Thanks, Jeff

Mopar use to put a chamfer on the #1 main bearing to help lube the timing chain, but not since the mid 1970s shruggy
Put the new bearings in and don't worry about what use to be up twocents
None of the after market race or OEM replacement main bearings have had that chamfer since the mid 1980s is what I remember shruggy

I agree with Cab. I believe they figured the timing chain gets enough lube from the oil thrown off the # 1 bearing with a normal bearing in there. I honestly cant see the small chamfer on the edge of the bearing making much difference on how much oil is thrown out from the # 1 bearing. A Chamfer may just let the excess normal amount of oil thrown out spread a little more. But I also have never seen any bearing sets for 440 mains with a special bearing for # 1 and none have ever had timing chain abnormal wear. Ron

This is what I have been looking for. I Found this on google. I guess I just don't know how to use the search on Moparts. Never had much luck with it. Been a member for a long time (yellowgtx) Now I can sleep tonight and pit the crank in tomorrow not worring about #1 bearing
Thanks
