511 project - 07/26/17 10:30 PM

Been using all my free time lately to get this project finished. Just waiting on a radiator to get here and finding the correct hoses.

Tomorrow i'll get the plug wires run and hooked to coil. Ordered the engineered cooling products radiator in a 26" core and a shroud from summit. Shouldn't be too much longer.

Bend a piece of wire or coathanger to form the bends you need. Take it to the parts store and ask if you can look through their hose inventory. If I recall, my upper was a Ford Ranger part #.

I sectioned the chassis rails and fitted a 32" rad.

Looking good!I bet this gives you the itch to drive it also. Will you run the plug wires under the pipes?I used some 2 piece wire separators from the auto parts store.

Re: 511 project - 07/27/17 02:26 PM

I think my crossflow on my 517 used a top hose from a 5.0 Lincoln Mark 7 if I remember right.

Might want to re-think the flex fan and go to electric pullers. Rigid/semi-flex fans are big HP killers. In fact Dulcich and Fryberger did an informative EngineMasters episode on it on youtube.

Re: 511 project - 07/27/17 03:18 PM

I'm gonna have to do a little cutting to get the 26" in there. shouldn't be too bad. Using a shroud with this as well.

Re: 511 project - 07/27/17 03:19 PM

yeah, the wires run under the headers. Gonna work on those today.

Re: 511 project - 07/27/17 03:22 PM

Gonna take this in steps. Oil cooler then electric fans then new 2 row 1.5"/ row radiator if needed. More than likely i will spend the rest of the summer figuring everything out.

You may have to make a tab that holds the wires against the engine and have the header bolt hold it.The good thing is you have aluminum heads with a sealed header bolt hole.

Re: 511 project - 07/28/17 02:15 AM

All went well with the plug wires under headers. Had to wire tie them back away from headers. Plugs are easy to change on dr side, but pass side is a bit difficult.

Re: 511 project - 07/28/17 03:39 AM

Did you put an engine plate in the rear also ?

Headers are the Maddogs or TTI ?

Re: 511 project - 07/28/17 04:05 AM

Re: 511 project - 07/28/17 06:01 AM

Where did you get the front plate ?

Will removing the valve covers help you reach the plugs on the ps?This helps with getting to mine.

Re: 511 project - 07/28/17 06:18 PM

Not really. I have to remove the pressure regulator from the inner fender, than i can reach up under the #2 tube to get them. Not bad, but more effort involved than with the dr side.

Egineered cooling products Radiator is in. Surprised how well the summit shroud fit radiator and fan. Think this will cool?

should do good

Re: 511 project - 07/30/17 04:46 AM

I primed engine again today and rolled it over with the starter a few revs to make sure all pushrods are turning being it has a flat tappet cam. I can hear a clicking sound from the starter/vert area. Not sure what it is. Looked at vert bolts and they are not hitting anything. I can hear it click once/revolution. Either vert or trans. I have the trans in neutral.

Re: 511 project - 07/30/17 05:21 AM

things could make noise, converter not full, no load on the front pump.

Re: 511 project - 07/30/17 06:36 AM

Ok. Hope thats all it is. Was gonna fire it up in neutral so everything fills up,but not sure thats nessessary.

Re: 511 project - 07/30/17 07:54 AM

yes fire it up in neutral with 5, or more qts already in it before you start it. I like to have the wheels off the ground on stands

I have Doms number for that. Shouldn't be too far off. Had Dom and Mark whittier insite on dominator build.

That is great to have some tech help from builders who know how.I used a 1050 in the 1990's[n/a] with a .509 and a .590 cam and liked it.
ps:Don't take my continued post's as me being a know it all,I am just making conversation.

Do you have a deep trans pan?I think as long as you have 1.5 qts in the vert and about 7 in the pan the trans should be ok with the main concern being the vert being dry.

Re: 511 project - 07/30/17 06:48 PM

no problem. I take all opinions and comments. Its very helpful. No professional here either. Been thru a couple trade schools and wrenchin most of my life, but stall appreciate others insite. always helpful.
I have 1 qt in the vert and 10qts in trans with deep pan. should be full.

Re: 511 project - 07/30/17 07:11 PM

Your carb must be 2" above the hood line on the front edge. For jetting I ran 88pri/92 sec no pv's so I will be interested to see what you end up with a pv in front if yoou do that.

Re: 511 project - 07/30/17 07:51 PM

I'm using a six pack hood. hoping filter clears. I believe i put a 86/93 in it with a 6.5pv

Nice!I was able to tune good vacuum so I hope you can also.I also wanted to say I use a Tee handle on the corner valve cover studs and it makes things easy to undo.
