Will a 12" wheel fit in a MINI-tubbed '68 Cuda - 02/24/09 04:19 AM

Im ready to order wheels and really wanted a 12" wheel. The car is minitubbed with stock framerails. I had a '68 with 10" wheels and thought I remembered them fitting good. Anyone on here with a 12" and minitubbed A body? Pictures would be great. Thanks

Not really sure if you're gonna be able to do it. I've never looked up under a '67-'69 Cuda to see the area you'd be working with. I'm sure it'll fit with the correct measuring. Chris (B1Cuda) might have 12's on his Cuda. I can't remember, so I can't speak for him.

However, on my '72 Dart I had Alumastar wheels with double beadlocks, which increased my total wheel size to a little over 11" from the original 10". I ran the car with M/T 30x13.5 ET Street DOT's. They tucked decent for a minitub and stock framerail. If I ran a smaller tire I could've had the rear even lower. Had to trim the upper inner lip to let the car sit down on the tire a little without rubbing. Here's a pic.

it can be done but probably looking at custom wheels.if your still buying holeshot will make them for you.i think youll need btw 7-8"BS to work.

I'm putting 12" rims on my Duster, same wheelhouses as an early Cuda. I'd say the tire size is the bigger deal than the rim width. You should have about 15" of tub to work with.

Hard to get a wheel with enough backspace using a stock width rear.

I tried using a 12 drag lite 3 1/2 bs on my 68 Dart. Mini tubs, spring relocation, inner fender rolled, 1/2 wheel spacer, 44' dana, 12x29 Hoosier slick. If I remember correctly I have 15" of wheel well opening. The 12" wheel widened the center section of the tire and they would not fit. I use a 10" 3" bs weld star without a spacer now.

I have a 72 Duster with set of 12" wheels and 28x13.50 et streets under it and it is only mini tubbed and springs relocated! My buddy has a Barracuda and he also runs a 12" wheel and a 28x14.50 hoosier with no problem.

It takes a little measuring, but they fit.

I don't see it. I have 9" rims. 2" out 7" in with 13.50 et streets and they are wall to wall. I don't see another 3" and dusters are have alot wider wheel wells than an older barracuda.

i have 12" rims with 71/2 backspace weld wheels.running phoenix 11.5x29.5 which are actual 12x30.0. stock width rearend.the main clearance issue is to make sure the inner tub is flush with the frame rail and not to get narrow at the top.the left side which is usually tighter is the one to look at.if you move your spring perches a little it helps alot with clearance.you don't have to center the rearend but move it a little definately helps otherwise you may have to use a spacer on that side.

I had a 69 Cuda that was mini tubbed using aftermarket tubs and springs moved into the frame rails.I ran a 12" wheel and a 12.2x 31.25 Firestone drag tire and it fit.Had to trim the wheel openings and eliminated the lips.
I used a 52" wide Dana.

I have 10.5 width tyres, which actually measure just over 13" with the bulge of the tyre, if 12" wide tyres were fitted to my 10" rims, would the bulge width be the same or would i need 12" rims to keep it the same.

My Duster runs 15x12s with 4.00" BS and a 13x31 tire; minitubbed, leaf springs in the rails, narrowed Dana. A bit tight, but no problems. Wheel openings are trimmed at the front & rear. Pics at http://topside.info on page 1 & 2.

I run 12 inch wheel..it is a 4 inch backspace, but could go 4.5.I have run it with the 10 inch wheel also.with a 3.5 backspace.I actually like the looks of the car better with the 10inch..

My car is mini tubbed with ladder bars and coil overs.

!2" wide rim with 6" bs with 11.5 29.5w's will not fit. Tire fits tight against the frame.

Hi Bob. No, the Dana was cut down a little and I can't remember the exact measurements because it was so long ago. It was a ladder bar suspension also. It has Strange Pro Race brakes on it. Yes, the rearend was moved about 3/4 or 1" if I remember correctly and the front bottom lip was trimmed for a little more clearance since the tire was 30". I didn't want the car sitting up high and I wanted the tire to tuck. The car would've looked a little better with a 29" or 28" tire, then I really could've tucked the tire as much as I wanted. The stock wheel tubs were sectioned for the mini-tub look and came out really nice, looked factory. Also, I'm almost certain my backspacing on the wheels were 4.5". Hope this helps.

So, you guys running the 12" wheels on a A-Body Cuda, does your tire tuck up into the wheel well or is the car all jacked-up in the rear? I bet a (probably have to be custom built) 11" wheel with 5" backspacing would work great or 12" with 5" backspacing. Toss up some pics of you have them.

hi wes thanks for the info. My car had the springs moved in before i bought it and the rear end is supposed to of been shortened. but i do not know how much. My car has 15x8 weld wheels and m/t 275/60/15 tires on it now. looks like i can move the rear back 1-1/4 with the extra holes in the spring mounts. here is a pick that shows how close the tires are now. thanks Bobby

Re: Will a 12" wheel fit in a MINI-tubbed '68 Cuda - 02/26/09 04:56 AM

It looks like to me it depends on two variables. One, how high the rear fenderwells are in relation to the tire/wheel and two, what tire you are trying to run. Section widths will vary even with the same published size. Street drag tires look to have less bulge in the sidewall area. I run my rear end height just 2" above the wheel rim and there is no way the 12" wheel will work with the 12x29 Hoosier slick. If I jacked the car up until the rear fenderwell lip was above the center section then I could run the 12" wheel and probably a larger tire.

Re: Will a 12" wheel fit in a MINI-tubbed '68 Cuda - 02/26/09 05:09 AM

I don't have recent photo but right now until tomorrow i've been running 11.5-30's on 10" rims with 4"back space fit great with the car lowered so the wheel well lip is about 1/2 down on the tire. I think the only way to find out what will fit is borrow a wheel and tire of the size you want to run and see if it will work. There has been a lot of guy's say what will work but the biggest problem you don't have the rear end shortened the same as them, that makes back space on the rim impossible to guess at. I have see chassis builders put the tire/ wheel combo under the car with no rear end in the car, lower the car down to ride height ,position the tire/ rim to the out side [ nothing looks worse than a car with the tire sticking in 4" ] then measure between the inner face of the rim to get the new rear end width. Just last week a friend of mine borrowed one of my tire/ wheels to test fit on his car. He was thinking of going with 6 1/2" back space combo, when we put up my 6" the tire hit the frame. So take the extra time to get it right or you'll have a set of rims for sale cheep.
