Roadrunner day two street racer ideas.

Roadrunner day two street racer ideas. - 06/19/17 12:24 PM

I'm looking at building a '69 Roadrunner post car into a day two street racer for a bit of fun, I have many period correct parts left over from other projects but need some ideas about what intake, carb, ignition & rocker covers etc to run.
The car is a 383 4-speed car but I will be updating the 383 with a 440 & the magnum 500 style wheels will probably go in favour of original Keystones, Super tricks or a combination of the two.

What are your thoughts? Thanks

Tunnel Ran 2-660 holleys, big yellow, accel super coil and plug wires, red or blue anodized al. valve cover hold downs, cool can, hurst line lock, air shocks, red painted rear drums.

And dont for get the BIG black fuzzy dice, with roach clip feather attached and the rear window decal, GAS, GRASS or AZZ, NO ONE RIDES FOR FREE!

I do have some of those parts & will research the others, parts here are a bit like rocking horse poo, quite hard to find so I usually import most of what I need, thanks

Not sure I want to go to tunnel ram yet but I like your other ideas, I have one of those coils & a cool can already & possibly the hold down bolts so I'll have to go hunting. The painted brake drums is a good touch & I did that back in the day myself & the period correct decal idea rocks! Cheers

Super Tricks did not exist in '69.
Day two mods ... Hurst T handle, mags - Cragars, Keystones or Ansen "Sprints", big 'n little tires, Grant wheel, slapper bars, headers, cherry bombs, chrome or finned aluminum valve covers, intake & carb, dual point dist, coil, cam

I know this Tumblr is for "70's Street Machines" but take a look through some pages, might find some inspiration.

Your probably thinking of the steel chrome 5 spoke Cragar SST wheels, I had them on my 1970 4 speed Hemi Baracuda due to NHRA not allowing legal NGRA stockers to use lightweight aluminum wheels like the Super Tricks and Centerline wheels runaway
As far as buiding a 440 block, I wouldn't if you want to make north of 650 HP on pump gas tsk
Find a decent 400 block and build yourself a real good large C.I pump gas stroker motor devil
Tell people it is a original low deck 361 block that runs real good whistling devil grin
Especially the Furd and Cheby guys stirthepot grin

Does day 2 have to be what was available for that year of car or just in the era. I ran super tricks back when they came out in the early seventy's on my 68 roadrunner. Actually i'm still running them on my 67 barracuda today. Same Accel Super coil also . Just sold off my original Hurst Super shifter from the early 70's.

Wish these tires were back in production, but if you can find a decent pair of non rotted Super/Stock Formula 1's, that would be bananas on the street.
I got an overwhelming good response from wearing these 10- years ago. Imagine now.

Might be kinda hard to see, but look at the rear 1/4 glass of my road runner. Those are vintage "Holley Equipped", "Skyjackers", and "Cragar Hot Pipes" (whatever those are?) decals from back in the day. That's my favorite part of the car, lol. They're old, cracked, faded, etc. Love it!

All the photos of "back then" are paper photos.

Currently I'm redoing the car and it looks like this:

Air shocks to compliment the excessively wide tires, mounted on the improperly backspaced deep-dish mag wheels.

Doesn't look like a day 2 car to me, that's years later people were doing this stuff.

Great ideas guys & thanks for the pics, I was still at primary school in '69 & to be honest I probably never saw a '69 Roadrunner in the flesh until I was almost 30 as there aren't too many of them here in New Zealand, hell I had never seen an E-body Cuda until mine rolled out of a shipping container 25 years ago!

Found this on ebay last night, looks well used & that's the look I'm going for.

I was looking through some of the ignition parts I have for my Pro Stock Hemi project to see what would suit & need some input please.

I think the mag would be too much, is the Mallory double life too old?
How about one of the tach drive units, I have factory cast & aftermarket alloy units.

I think I have one of these coils hidden away somewhere, is this the right one?

circa '78. Brand new fenders from the dealer $77 each !! 383, 12.5:1, tunnel ram w/2 600's

Re: Roadrunner day two street racer ideas. - 06/21/17 04:09 AM

Yes that is a super coil but the decal looks newer than the 1970 one that I still run on my Barracuda. But, who would know that it's not old school.

Are those fiberglass genders from the dealer?

Make sure you stick some white lights w/toggle on the dash mounted down on the back of the traction bars or hook a toggle to the reverse lights so you can cruise with them on meaning you are looking for a race.

I was hoping someone would say that!

I'll use a Ramchargers one on my Hemi & this Dovovan one in the Runner, both were made by Donovan & they still make replacement part which fit both!

LOL !! I had one and was bound and determined to use it ... till I tried degreeing the cam. I'm no quitter but I finally threw in the towel on that one and sold the unit. If they'd make the idler gear the same size as the crank gear it wouldn't be a problem but they're not. And the marks are on the three gears, not just the crank and cam. So when you turn the motor over you loose all reference. That seemed to be my problem anyway.

But I don't think a gear drive was a "day 2" mod in anyone's budget unless you had a pro stocker.

I've installed and use Donovans, Milidons and Keith Black gear drives on 426 hemi and B and RB wedge motors with instructions and by memory. Start with the cam dowel placed around 4 o clock by looking at the front of the motor and go from there. If the lifters are close to being even heights in the lifter bores your close thumbs scope
Once I have it where I want the intake lobe center I mark all three gears with matching mark with a drimel tool thumbs

Most cars rode around with the reverse lights on because you usually couldn't reuse the back drive linkage from the column with an aftermarket shifter. The column collar was left in the reverse position so that you could turn the key to lock and get the key out. When we saw a car go by with the reverse lights on, we'd say "there goes another Hurst shifter"

I guess I need to get back onto Donovan for a set of instructions as I want to run these on two of my cars, if it has been done many times before it must be possible with the right information & a whole bunch of patience I would imagine.

In Hindsight, I would mark the cam and crank gears and forget about the idler gear even being there. That's what was throwing me off. And I had no instructions for the set I had.

Degreeing cams is easy.
Put cam in, and find intake lobe max lift (Centerline.)
Lock cam in position, or at least mark the cam gear to block position.
Install degree wheel, find TDC, and zero degree wheel.
Rotate crank so degree wheel reads the installed centerline you want.
Install timing chain or idler gear without moving cam or crank position.
Done.
