Hmm what gives comp hydralic roller lifters not pumping up? - 05/18/17 09:12 PM

Ok so pretty fresh 360 been running great & making good power with not an issue. Fired it up last week & lots of lifter noise on both sides where it was pretty quiet before. Adjustable rockers that are set correctly ran thru them all again last night & its getting oil to the shafts. Kinda scratching our heads trying to figure this out & wondering if a cam bearing could have possibly spun causing an oiling issue or possibly something else??? What do you guys think?

So....... They were fine, and all of a sudden none of them pump up?

I'm thinking it's something else.

Did the motor get run into pretty hard valve float at all?

If you have oil at the rockers you dont have
a spun cam bearing.. look at simple stuff first

Yes the engines been running sound & hasnt skipped a beat car sat for a month fired it up to take for a cruise & noticed way more noise coming from under valve covers. oil pressure is at 60-65lbs. Its got a comp hydralic roller cam kit. Gonna investigate more on it this evening

No valve float tach & shift light is set to 6,000 rpm. Im sure thats way below the capability of the valve springs & cam

I doubt all or most of the lifters failed just sitting there.

What oil is in the motor?

If you have "thicker" oil in it, and the spring pressure has bled the lifters down, then they may be having a hard time getting the air bled back out of them with thick cold oil in the motor.

Also, if you have the pro magnum rockers, and not a lot of preload on the lifters, I've seen where pushrods can fall out on start-up after the lifters have bled down.
The pushrod cup on the rocker isn't very deep, and if the lifter is bottomed out and doesn't recover quick enough on start-up...... The pushrods can fall out of position.

I have not seen or heard of this happening with rockers that use ball and cup pushrods.

Lifter are not oiled through the cam bearings.

When was your last oil and oil filter change, and did you change the oil weight?

does the noise calm down after it is run for awhile?

Ok so got back on it last night ran thru valves to see how many lifters weren't pumped up. Found 3 on one side & 2 on the other. Also found out carb had a Stuck Float which is why it was running so rough while I was listening to the lifters clatter I may have over-reacted & shut it down to soon before all the lifters had time get oiled & pumped. Engine has 20w-50 Royal Purple. Anyhow fired it up let it run & clean out from stuck float and after quite a few minutes all the lifter noise calmed down & seemed to run pretty well. Hopefully just a false alarm but I'm keeping an eye on it.

They're going to bleed off after shut down....... So a little clatter after start up may be a fairly common occurance for you.

Comp lifters don't have a great track record imo.

Took the car to the strip last night & ran some passes went 12.50's @ 109. I noticed in between passes letting it cool down cuz it was HOT 95 out, upon start up lifters clattered then calmed down after 15 seconds. Wondering if i should look into some different roller lifters as preventative maintenance Hmm
