front schocks........coil over ? - 04/22/17 08:13 PM

I was wondering at waht point do you need schocks like the QA1 or Strange instead of lakewood ?

Are the front coil over really superior and why ?

As time goes we alwaysupgrade our cars from being a mild street performer to a not street legal anymore mild drag car.
I went from 400hp 5 years ago to 650hp now ....so my question was where in this timeframe someone does need 200$ schocks or 75$ pieces

For me its pretty simple.. can you control the
car 100% of the time.. does it do the same thing
over and over again.. does the 60'change on you..
if it changes MOST of the time its chassis or the
shocks arent doing their job

It 60 ft straight as an arrow no problems there....

What are the advantages of front coil over schock vs torsion bar....are they worth the expense ?

Are your 60' times the same all the time..
coil overs are lighter.. think what you get
vs torsion bar.. not even thinking about the
space you open up.. but with the coil over
you have a spring and shock in 1.. the torsion
bar you have a heavy bar and the adjuster parts
and the shock.. over all the coil over is a
lighter package

If I consider the space only, it is a no brainer !!

Weight saving is a plus.....do I need additional bracing for my A body when going coil over ?

Thanks

I recently converted my A body to coil over. Yes you need to brace the upper shock mount - it is not strong enough to support the weight of the front without the t bars. Lots of builders just tie into the forward bars. I used Hemi Denny's brace kit. Easy to install and can be modified to use the factory style stud type upper shock mount. The drivers for me were to lighten and loosen up the front, as well as gain access to seemingly unlimited spring rate options. I'm certain I overthought and overspent as there are stockers performing just as well or better. In any case - I'd do it again.

Viking, QA1 and Koni all make very good, adjustable, non-coil-over shocks that bolt in for OEM applications. You don't need to go through the added work & expense of modifying and strengthening your front end to adapt a coil-over shock, unless you really want to.

The adjustability and tuning for different tracks & conditions can come in handy for just about any ET range. But naturally, the more HP you make, the more helpful an easily adjustable shock can be.

Where did you get that Hemi Denny kit? I could use one of them.

Don't forget afco makes a double adjustable drop in front shock, which is also rebuildable and able to be fine tuned.

So........Not too many advantages going coil over.....except more room under

AFCO 3850m (5" stroke). Both Summit and Jegs have them listed on their sites.

Less weight, more spring rate choices, more room for headers. So weight less and make more hp, sounds like a win-win to me.
