After 30 minutes driving, my BB 727 4300 lbs car 10" converter gets up to 190* temp taken from the pan. in line should be 10*-15* hotter

I have a 12"x16" perma-cool cooler

My street driven 'Cuda with a 440, 10.5" converter with 3900 stall, 3700 lbs, 11.80's ET, runs about 150-170 in the pan. I also have a trans cooler electric fan I can turn on if needed, but usually don't.

At the track it rarely goes over 160 degs. w/a b&m cooler mounted behind my ft. valance and during the hot desert summers, maybe 180 max w/a 5000+ vert.

My tranny temp gauge rarely moves, it usually takes till 3rd or 4th round (after 3rd round its bascially round robin) then it slowly starts to move. I think the gauge starts at 140, don't think I"ve ever seen it above 170.

What would be considered "in the danger zone?"

Street/strip car, descent converter and gear, cooler, deep pan, ect.

200+ ??

The red dye in the standard petroleum ATF is designed to change colors at 325F, which is a way for the standard consumer and general automotive techs. of telling when the trans has been to hot So any temps below 275 F should be and is safe

A buddy of mine has a old Desoto 4dr that's factory equiped with the 383 8bbl. Anyway he had it at the Muscle Car Shootout at BIR a few years ago. He was racing another car so he had a friends wife run it in powder puff. No one told her not to sit in the staging lanes with the motor running with the trans in Drive. It got so hot the fluid turned green. We changed fluid&filter at the track and the car made it home. It started to slip a bit later on and he rebuilt it that winter. It's the only time I ever saw Dextron turn green. Dave

Dave, I saw that very thing in a NY at Kay Chrysler Plymouth in 1978. Unreal.

Good point. But remember, the hottest part the fluid sees is not the bottom of the pan that most people have the sensor in. The converter is typically the hot spot in a high stall, high perf usage. And that can be way over the pan temp.

A trans guy once told me not to bother with a transmission temp gauge, as it would only scare me

In any case, I've never ran one

Re: 727 Temperature - 02/21/09 02:58 AM

Years ago my dad let me use one of his 8" TA converters in my car to replace the stock one. One condition was that I had to have a trans temp guage since I drove the car on the street. That was one of the most active guages on the car as I put it in the hot line going to the cooler. It would be 280ish on a run but be 180 by the time I got my time slip. I was running a small stacked plate cooler ahead of the stock trans cooler in the rad.

Re: 727 Temperature - 02/21/09 02:10 PM

My old Cuda never got over 200 at the track (never street driven), even though the engine would go over 220 on occasion. I was told to keep it under 220 to make sure I didn't shorten the life of the trans too much.

Not to hijack the thread, but I am curious how much a 10 degree change in trans temperature made in ET and the track? Since my car was all over the place ET wise, I never was able to come to any conclusion on my own.

Re: 727 Temperature - 02/21/09 02:23 PM

I have been told that if you are up on the converter
with the trans brake you can develop 100* per second
and I would believe that is right after the converter
where they take the temp. I really dont think 10* will
make much or any difference.... JMO
