McGaha on NHRA P/S

McGaha on NHRA P/S - 03/31/17 04:56 PM

An interesting read on Chris McGaha's take on the current NHRA P/S class. Of special interest to me was Chris' thoughts on the Dodge engine and why it isn't competitive any more.

Very good read.. I did a study back at Chrysler
about moving the injectors around to make more
power and it can help.. that was with the same
injectors but just moving them and angle

Old info for sure. The Symetrical head has been around for a few years, just most teams set it aside and never really got after it. Now they are behind the 8 ball as they chose to run the Asymetric head instead. Now most are way behind playing catch up. No different than the DRCE 2/3 deal..

It was more like whining because Mopar wouldn't give him a pile of stuff for free.

IIRC, he said he regretted ever signing anything that sais Mopar on it for the fans.

I said on Yellowbullet that interview made him sound like a dick. He personally answered it with more whining about Mopar not giving him anything.

Thanks for clarification , I had heard something like that also, I am sure GM gives him all kind of stuff for free..... not. What makes him think he deserves anything he really hasn`t done crap. He could`t even do anything with the championship winning stuff he bought from Mike Edwards

I coulda swore people posted here claiming the mopar engines are making just as much power but they can't get them to launch. This was far more interesting to read than to actually watch pro stock!

Re: McGaha on NHRA P/S - 04/01/17 01:26 AM

I found it to be an interesting article, as expected, no one really gave up any information of any real substance. Most interesting was that Mopars went to the symmetric head with the Efi switch. As far as the RPM being needed for the Mopar combo, I'm not surprised by this. Allen Johnson was always very against the RPM limit.
The thing that stood out most was they all agreed that they need the three major Car makers back in the series. The last few years Pro Stock has been a millionaires playground, but that isn't sustainable.

Like Chris McGaha or not, he's racing Pro Stock, we're all just talking about it

Please explain what part of the PS rules give Mopars the "shaft".

Easy, mopar found a way to run with GM (rpm) and they put a 10,500 limit with the excuse of saving money. Saving money and Pro Stock never go in the same sentence. Did you not read the article? How many blocks, heads, cams, intakes, test sessions did these teams go through every day and NHRA is worried their spending too much money on valve springs? If they can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen!

So maybe Dodge should leave PS.

You honestly believe the 10.5 rule was aimed at Dodge? Maybe they should quit counting points and just give out participation trophies at the end of each event.

Mopar left the racing community years ago. There are no parts available, there is no tech service, and nothing in sight but what Fiat wants us to have. They should not be involved in Pro Stock.

I don't see teams running dodge for long when they can't compete and eventually there will be no mopar pro stock teams just like nascar.

Re: McGaha on NHRA P/S - 04/01/17 08:36 PM

Read what he said, if Dodge can't turn the rpm up they can't compete. Like Mc gay he said 1500 hp for GM, 1470 for Dodge at the imposed rpm limit. Do you think there would be any small block Chevys in comp eliminator or any class right now if they had put an rpm limit of 6000 on them. Gone with the dinosaurs by now. If you don't have parts, that's a different story. If they restrict ingenuity and invention, they're biased and hurting the class. I bet if it was the other way around one could hear the screaming from the moon.

Sounds like NHRA was trying to make one of their biggest sponsors happy by setting it up for GM cars to win.

This is one time I don't think that NHRA had any hidden agenda. The Mopars barely kept up, and rarely won prior to the rule change. IMO the problem is, very few options even for a guy like MaGaha. As far as the cheating or pushing the limits of the rules, I totally agree with him. There have been times, especially last year, where the Line/Anderson team was several hundredths ahead of the field. I think the RPM limit hurt many, not just Mopars. I wish Monte were still with us. I'm sure he would have something to say. Al and Boatracer know a lot of people in the know as well.

Re: McGaha on NHRA P/S - 04/02/17 01:46 AM

My feelings are that when it comes to rules changes along the lines of what they did to PS, no one with any kind of a handle on how the rules would impact the class was consulted.

Someone in the office gets an idea of what changes should be made to help with the class appeal and participation, and that's what gets handed down to the competitors........whether it's really the right way to go or not.

IMO, the rules changes have done ZERO to improve the spectator appeal or racer participation.

Re: McGaha on NHRA P/S - 04/02/17 09:12 PM

I'd bet fast68 is right: somebody in the office pulls an idea out of their butt, sells it to the other non-racers in charge, and away they go.
Any excuse of cutting expenses in PS sure isn't borne out by 20 intakes & other parts or who knows how many days of dyno time & parts sacrificed there.
Regarding McGaha's comments on creating an internal fuel leak: yeasterday I finally got around to watching the Gators elim round (NHRA has sunk in priority with me), and it seemed to me that the Summit cars both sounded rather blubbery @ low RPM. I clearly recall how crisp PS carbs used to be even cruising through the pits. Hmmmm.

That's what it is around these parts. Handful of them.
