I'll see if I can find a pic.. but its set up
with just the tube sticking out of the bumper
area that has a grade 8 bolt through it.. the
whole chute and bracket pulls out so there is
about 2" of tube sticking out... sorta hard to
see in this pic

Here's one on a Nova at my friend's shop. Same type of setup I plan on doing.

And yeah, everyone says to use a Stroud chute!

This is from JBMopars Duster build up from a few years back. This car has so much cool stuff happening, hope he doesn't mind me posting these. He is an excellent fabricator. Have not seen him post here for a few years.

Anyway, he put this bar between the rear frame rails with a tube sticking out rearward through the rear bumper. The license plate flips down on this car. Duster filler tube is on the left rear quarter, Dusters don't normally have flip down license brackets. (at least mine doesn't) Pretty slick!

IIRC, the fill tube on an early B body is behind the flip-down license plate bracket. Maybe you could figure something out.

And then...

Great pics guys.Is through the licence plate area the ideal spot, can it be higher or lower??Would through the glass bumper be kosher?
I like my licence plate penguin

The 9 will be changed to an 8 this year whistling

Bottom line Al, you need some sort of support bar with a tube sticking out the back for the chute mount. However you execute that is pretty much up to you.

This is RVW's '64 Plymouth from B Bodies only.

Re: Removable Parachute mount. - 03/28/17 07:46 PM

The only thing that needs a solid permanent mount in the anchor cord. The actual chute pack itself just need something to carry its weight. Does not have to be elaborate or heavy.

Re: Removable Parachute mount. - 03/28/17 08:07 PM

I was thinking that a "trailer hitch" type mount for the lanyard under the valance and some tabs to the trunk lid with quick pins for the pack. The cable is something else to think about...

Thanks for the clarification. Light and simple are key words here regarding the car in question.

Are the two methods I posted overkill?

No. The whole deal as one unit is cool. I just hate drilling holes where they shouldn't be. That Duster is killer!

I know it seems nit-picky, but is there a preference for having the anchor pin horizontal or vertical...I see it both ways.

That is nice where you can pre fab the whole thing and then mount it.

Re: Removable Parachute mount. - 03/29/17 06:20 PM

My cars are in California right now. I will be there this weekend racing and will get some pics of that I have. The anchor point it tied tot he chassis and the cute pack themselves are on liteweight small diameter(3/8")moly tubing.

This is what we use to mount the chute pack itself. Just attach it to the anchor point mount with pins.

Re: Removable Parachute mount. - 03/31/17 02:01 AM

I like your optimism about running 8s Al.
But don't you think you should get the car down the track consistently first before spending on a chute?
I've seen lots of cars running in the 8s with no chute as well as others with chutes that are never used.
You can buy lots of fuel with what a chute will cost.
Best of luck with your project.

I agree.. I have a chute and only use it on a
few tracks.. I prefer not to use it unless needed..
I hate packing it even if its so called "easy"

The car is consistant. It goes consistanty faster every pass whistling
The track will see over 150 MPH and they will give you one warning.Have been almost 145 on pump gas. With the other mods that are being done 150 should be off the truck with a street driven heap.I follow in Freds footsteps in being an exibitionist and maybe some match race bandits no

Re: Removable Parachute mount. - 02/08/18 01:08 AM

Next question....how far away from the car does the mount need to be so it opens properly??I have seen from 4 inches to 12 inches work

Best pass last season it went a click under 147mph and 9.3x.That was 6 lbs of boost.Real happy with the progress! Just been too cold to work in the garage wrench

Re: Removable Parachute mount. - 02/08/18 05:35 PM

Its not a question of really how far. A lot of cars put them back a little bit to avoid the wheelie bars, wings etc. The spring will launch the pilot far enough to make sure it blooms you just don't want it caught up on anything back there. Don't angle it down for sure, slight upward angle and far enough to clear anything in the way easily. On the Vette it is MAYBE 4" from the body, never an issue with it...

Does the spring launcher get flush mounted or does it protrude from where the chute pack is mounted?
Is the spring launcher that much better ????

Are any of the above pictures use a launcher??Is it flat mounted??

Re: Removable Parachute mount. - 02/12/18 01:21 AM

No launcher on the Vette just it is just spring launched. My Stratus uses air launchers.

Re: Removable Parachute mount. - 03/27/18 03:53 AM

My Stroud launcher chute came in.Also bought an install kit and cable kit.
Have to figure out the mounting situation for the launcher to be removable. The release lever is real chincey, should have grips like a pistol.
I think I want to mount the lever on the floor.Does it matter where it's mounted as long as I can reach it?? Seems that most of the pictures I see the lever is overhead work

Re: Removable Parachute mount. - 03/27/18 05:32 PM

mine is on the floor between the pass seat and the trans tunnel

I also have a removable chute mount .
have to take a picture though

Re: Removable Parachute mount. - 03/27/18 05:47 PM

In a car without a funny car cage, we fab a U shaped mount, attached to the center of the main hoop, and extending forward to mount the lever horizontally, right where the driver wants it, with an attachment for the cable. The lever is mounted where the driver can pretty much swipe it with his hand without having to look for it and the whole affair is kept up tight to the ceiling so the guy's not bashing his head against it. We use Morse cables and proper mounting hardware. Not the cheap stuff that comes with the kits.

CMallister, thank you.I found some other ideas also. But the chute mount with the launcher will prove more difficult!

FWIW on the Vette the handle is down on the console. It has T tops(well one piece of Lexan now)so it just looks better down low.

I looked at many pictures. It comes down to how you end up fabbing your mount. So this is how it ended up and it is detachable.
