INDY valve covers/breather/MSD dist questions - 02/26/17 06:40 PM

INDY valve covers ( 440 )
1) What breathers are you guys using ?
2) Did you use a particular aftermarket set up?
3) Any advice on where to drill the valve covers ( front or back
4) Any issues with rocker arm clearance or hitting ? ( Harland Sharp rockers )

5) MSD billet distributor ?? will this clear the INDY covers ?
6) Is there a small and regular size MSD distributor to choose from if VC clearance is a issue ?

Thx
Doug

Breathers are a matter of personal choise,we put both sides up front if possible. We have not had any clearance issues with MSD distributer and most all aftermarket rockers. With the MSD distributer just index the cap so that the hold down screws are away from the valve cover.

Indy valve covers on 440-1s clear the MSD billet distributor (RB). That may be different for other brand heads. I use a remote breather. No rocker clearance problem (T&Ds) with the weld-on bung, and no more oil dripping on the headers.

1) What breathers are you guys using ?
run of the mill chrome breathers

2) Did you use a particular aftermarket set up?
I use the billet adapters available from Jegs, etc.

3) Any advice on where to drill the valve covers ( front or back
drill so the covers are interchangeable - rear on the left, front on the right

4) Any issues with rocker arm clearance or hitting ? ( Harland Sharp rockers )
HS rockers here - no issues

5) MSD billet distributor ?? will this clear the INDY covers ?
Clearing the head is more of an issue. My Indys are an early set that were not machined for dist clearance but my billet Firecore clears. Can't see the MSD being any different.

6) Is there a small and regular size MSD distributor to choose from if VC clearance is a issue ?
Shouldn't be an issue.

I used Harland Sharp rockers on my S/Rs and have a baffle plate welded under my Mr Gasket breathers no oil leaks

Here's what I use Doc. 440 w/ Indy SR heads and Indy valve covers. MSD pro billet distributor...I did have to slightly clearance the valve cover to clear the distributor. Very light clearance, no biggy.
I have 1.5 ratio Harland Sharp roller rockers w/ a .700" lift roller cam.

For "breathers" I just use a -10an hose off each valve cover that "T" into a breather tank. The weld-on bung fittings on the valve covers are not baffled at all, just open underneath. I really like this setup. Vents the motor very well and no leaks.
Open breathers will put oil all over the place and vacuum pumps are a pain in the rear.

Thanks Chip !
Looks like the breather tank is next to the rad on the passenger front fender...
I assume you just drain it as needed,,,
I like the breather idea if it will keep the mess down under the hood.
Do you have to run baffles ?? ( not sure )
Thanks for the tip on the distributor,,,always looks tight to me,,but didn't want to do alot of grinding on the VC.
Thanks again wink

The tank hardly ever needs to be drained. Usually just gets some condensation in it.
There are no baffles in or under the fittings on the valve covers. Just drilled a hole and welded on the -10an bung. I just made sure the hole was in between the first pair of rocker arms.
I just had to clearance the valve cover a little to clear the distributor, not the cyl. head.

I love the way most pics show the logo milled off on the valve covers. I did mine also, as well as the intake.

LOL, yep. Mine had the logo when new, but I set them up on the DCM head surfacer and cut em smooth. Wish I had a milling machine to smooth out the manifold too.
