volare race car , who built this car and engine ? - 01/28/17 09:25 PM

okay , i posted this in the wrong place i think since nobody seems to have any idea on this car . being a race car , and moparts members are everywhere , somebody has to have seen this car at a local track ? i just bought the car and trying to find history , info , pics , video etc . the roll cage certification sticker has a ca. on it so i assume it has been raced in calif. ? but not sure if the ca means the state ? it is a tube frame a-arm car , so not legal for super stock classes but may have been in super gas ? the guys name is on the front motor plate , john colone , anyone know him or this car ? you can email me if you dont want to post info publicly , tedevans57@yahoo.com

@ dodge daytona , i dont think it's done nice enough to have been a pro stock . it is a 2x3 frame with mustang II front , rack & pinion , with a dana 60 in the rear with ladder bar /coilovers . the car must have had a tiny (4 ft tall ? ) driver . i dont have long legs and i'm only 5'9" tall and my head almost hits the roof , and the pedals are so close i can barely get my left leg back far enough to use the brake pedal . i know how to fix it all so it's no big deal but i could not drive it like this . i seriously think the driver was much less than 5 ft tall . my sister is 4 ft 10" and i bet she would feel tall in this car , lol .

dont take offense ,your pics of the yellow car reminds me of our yellow taxi volare was a joke car that was done for laughs . it was heavily rusted underneath the bondo and yellow paint . it was driven from louisiana with 430 gears (i am glad it wasn't me driving ) , we took it on trade for the 340 that was in it . nothing special , a cast crank 340 with a 501 comp cam hyd. we played with it , put gears and slicks , 750 dp carb and a 3500 stall conv. we got that car to go 12.68 at terminal island in so cal. our 14 year old nephew learned to drive in that car on the strip . we later put a 360 in it with a cheater cam and got it to run mid 11's until it ripped the spring mounts out of the body . we called it the yeller cab and it got a lot of laughs .

Kinda glad nobody bought it....I just put a fully ported 4500 intake and borrowed the Dominator off my Cuda on it now, and in a week or two I am going to re-fresh the trans with all good billet parts from A&A like I just did to my Cuda....Then it will go to Veto's and we will scale it again and make sure its right on for racing this year. My 60ft varied a little last year and it bit me a couple times on my dial in. Hoping to find enough HP to 6.0's this year on pump gas.

John Colone owned a Chrysler/Plymouyh dealer in Pinkney MI. He had a couple of bracket cars and some street stuff as I remember. I've seen this car run at Milan long ago I'm sure it was built local in the Detroit Metro area, or close. The only other tube chassis Volare I remember around here was Van Smith's which was built by The late Steve Greabeck.

I can picture the Volare in question running out at Milan as well but do not remember what years. I am thinking late 80's to early 90's. I remember this other Grebeck built car also. Two different cars.

There is a pretty clean looking F-body on the Seattle CL right now for $1700.00 and would be a good start if you wanted one for a daily or a race car...it is not mine!

https://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/cto/5980146860.html

The guy even listed a phone number in the ad, unlike those people that use the blind CL e-mail service.

That is the other car I was referring to. Nicely done car but I never like all of the purple anodizing all over it though.

Van Smith owned an anodizing shop on Telegraph in Redford if I remember right. I loved his '77.

The car was raced at milan ,the engine was built by one of the long time service techs ,b1 headed b block ,727 trans ,the driver was a guy that worked in the parts department cant remember name

Re: volare race car , who built this car and engine ? - 02/20/17 07:07 AM

top8x7b , do you recall what it ran ? any pics from the old days or maybe a track photographer's name ?
i found out some more :
i got a call back from one of the former owners/drivers . he tells me the car was built in 1976 , as a body in white , it ran in b/gas with a tunnel ram hemi and a clutchflite trans . the car was raced with the name "SPECIAL EDITION " , and it held some records in nhra . the body was steel because of the rules they had but it had the glass hood and a tube frame with all alum floor and interior ......... in the 80's , after it was no longer in a class , it was bracket raced with a 400/440 crank with original b1 heads , that he said were too big and slowed it down . (explains the huge header primaries ). it seems the car went to a couple of the guys who knew each other and it ended up with this last engine . a 400 with stroker crank , alum rods , roller cam , and b1 bs heads . he says he saw it run 9.40 at 140 with the current engine . it 60 foots in the 1.20's (for that e.t. and big tires & light weight it should ) . some of the guys involved in the car have passed but several are still with us . . i am waiting to see some pics he says he has of the original build . i will share when i get more info ..............i found my supertrick wheels so it will look like this pic now

Re: volare race car , who built this car and engine ? - 02/21/17 05:15 AM

George Freymuth owned and raced the car when it was last at Colone/Pinckney Chrysler as he was the top salesman there for many years and has retired about 5 years ago.I believe it did run in the 9's before he sold it. One thing I remember when it was at the dealer one day while they were tuning on it, the throttle was damn crisp at any blip of it. John Colone, Jim Welch would know more details and Jims son ran it at Milan after George's eyesight wasn't the greatest.
