Are Alcohol Heads different Than Fuel

Are Alcohol Heads different Than Fuel - 02/14/09 02:33 PM

Just have a quick question are alcohol heads different design than gas/fuel heads on a hemi, or are they the same between the two fuels? If they are different what are the changes? Also what are the differences in piston design? Would an alcohol head work on a fuel motor with correct pistons? Thanks

The main difference is that you need more CR to run Alcohol, so a minor chamber. I think > 10.5:1 CR should be fine!

Sorry... I tought in ethanol.... here in Brazil is full of Alcohol cars... or ethanol....

They can be swapped, but there are a few differences.

Most Alcohol heads use special head studs that allow the removal of the rocker gear without affecting head torque. It's a special stud with two nuts. The head must be cast and machined for this.

Fuel heads also run rocker arms with no roller tips (at least on the exhaust). The valve sizes are a little different too because it has more effect with an alcohol motor. The CR is different, but that's up to the piston not the head.

There are many differences between fuel and alcohol heads, so NO they are not even close to being the same. Fuel heads has down nozzles that alcohol heads doesn't have for one.

Good point - I totally overlooked that. Here's a pic of a Top Fuel head showing the nozzles.

But for the most part they are the same in basic design

I would bet that an Alcohol Motor would run on Nitro with just cam, injector, and compression changes...like thats no big deal...

if we talk billet heads

What else is there in alcohol/nitro racing?

Are you saying fuel as in gasoline OR fuel as in a
top fueler... because the only differences in my alky
head vs a gas head was the valve dia, being the alky
head gets a larger valve dia..... this is on a W-9

I am talking alky and gasoline. Sorry about the confusion. Would alcohol heads work on a street/strip motor? These are DART hemi heads I am taking about. Thanks

I have seen this kind of post on other sites and I think one thing that no one ever asks is what kind of preformance are you looking to get? If you mean will the motor run then yes. Will it get more hp and or tq from one to the other then that is where the debate is. There are a ton of differences in the hemi head world. The older heads stay alot closer to the standard 426 heas but the later model stuff is way different.Just my 2 cents
