Cast 440 crank can they be offset ground to 3.91 stroke.

So can a cast 440 crank be offset ground using chev 2.20 rods to 3.91 stroke?? are they strong enough for a 550 to 600 hp ish motor?
Giving one to a friend for a 400 project since it has to go be ground for smaller mains maybe go the extra mile and get rod journals offset ground to 2.2 at same time?
with lighter pistons what are the balancing issues???
I have two here and another friend has a 400 block maybe I'll dabble for a spare?

As long as there not cracked to start with I don't see any reason you can't offset grind them
If you have a 400 block now and want to build it use the offset ground 440 crank in it That works great with a longer than stock after market BB Chevy forged H beam rod with the proper piston for the compression ratio you want

I'd rather start with a forged unit personally. A 470 is going to cost at least 6k to build decently, why push all those chips in on a cast crank when he could likely find a forged unit for under $150. ??

Certainly not saying it can't be done or that my opinion is gospel, just my thoughts.

Depends on costs of labor. I just did this with a forged factory 3.75 crank, and in retrospect, I should have just bought a Molnar. S/F.....Ken M

I have a new 3.91 Molnar w/ BB chebby journals that I won't be using - send a PM if you want a great deal on it. Why start with a cast crank when these are available? Tom checked the machining on it and it is spot on.

McCandless used to sell NOS cast 440 cranks for $50. It's probably OK for 450 HP, maybe up to 500 HP. IMO, not worth spending the $ for offset grinding & balancing one.
