Hurst Quarter Stick Mopar work with Powerglide? - 10/27/16 01:59 AM

Currently have a reverse pattern quarter stick with a front entrance cable entry...Looking to go powerglide, and wondering if I can use the same shifter or if I need a new one?

As long as the two brackets (shifter and trans.) provide the correct ratio there shouldn't be a problem. I used a different gate and trans. bracket to run my PG through my TA Cheetah shifter. Works great! For a front exit cable shifter, I had to install the PG shift lever upside down. You'll see, it explains itself. Nothing internal. I got a generic bracket, from Hughes I think, for running the cable to the top and had to modify it to get the correct ratio/cable length. The current 3rd gear position on the shifter won't be used. You can probably fab a stop to it somehow where you aren't trying to force the cable into stretching out. Hook it all up in neutral so the cable end at the trans is adjusted to slip in and out of the hole with no resistance then have someone move the shifter through every position while you are under the car making sure that the cable end will slip in and out of the hole easily. Sometimes it will have a little resistance at the far end of the spec. (1st and Park).

I believe that there are two different internal levers for the PG to run the two or three different brand shifters. I'm not positive on this. You might find out about that. I had Mike at Mikes Transmissions Lancaster, Ca set mine up for the shifter I was using.

Late model hurst shifters have the gate welded in. So you will have to buy new gate and cut old gate out and weld new one in. You will need a new transmount bracket as well or modify your existing one.

I sold my old shifter and bought a new one, not worth my time doing all that.

I don't think it needs a new gate. They are not gated where the shifter moves from side to side. You just don't pull it all the way back, you use the current 2nd as the new 1st.

I unfortunately have a TA shifter and things had to get a little ugly on my headers that are already too small lol, should have gotten a hurst, heard they fit better

All the front exit shifters for TF's are the same. The cable interferes in the header area on a stock type car. I had to heat wrap the cable on my new Hurst shifter for my Dart. I will say that it works excellent though...The race car is a front exit shifter but the cable goes through a hole in the trans. tunnel to come in to the trans. from the back.

Brad, was your quarter stick the pistol grip style? I have read on some threads about changing that welded gate plate and then others say you don't need to...I guess I'll have to take a peak at mine, but if it involves removing a welded piece I'll just sell it and buy new as well

mshred, if your shifter is the pistol grip don't you have to pull the other handle to get it in 3rd? With the PG you won't use that position. 2nd is your new 1st.
