Inline trans filter

I have been using a generic inline.. filter 3 inch. 3/4 Inlet
. Is it possible I'm using too restrictive of a filter causing excessive heat in the trans.. what filter you guys successfully using.

I found this on summit's website.. I have been grabbing off-the-shelf at O'Reilly anything that would fit.. I'm not so sure that was a good idea

Why do you think you need a filter other than the one in the pan?

when I was bracket racing the car with a 904.. it seemed to help greatly keep the trans clean... I recently switched over to a ProGlide.. and maybe an inline filter isn't necessary I do not know..? Honestly I was hoping for some feedback..

A RACE trans, usually with tight and or high stall converters, need to move a lot of fluid to keep heat down. That said, any external filter has to be placed in the cooler circuit. A circuit that in itself is somewhat restrictive depending on mods. Adding a filter here, to me would only increase that restriction. Most RACE glides these days have the cooler circuit modified to just dump the fluid back into the pan in lieu of using the "In" port on the case. So if your plumbing is utilizing the entire cooler circuit, that could be a potential problem. You should likely consult with your trans builder and see what HE says. I know on ours, the "In" port is completely blocked off

Look at the orifice sizes in the case and compare them to the orifices in the filter. I'd say the major restriction is in the case orifices, not anything downstream.

A filter in the line leading to the cooler prevents it from collecting debris.

And, since the fluid returning from the cooler is the main lube circuit, a filter isn't a bad idea.

My kids 62 300 came from factory with an inline filter.It was on the return line.IIRC he still has one or two OE ones left.It wasnt a big filter either.Looked like a large fuel filter.Rocky

at one time, wix had those, but looking in my master catalog, i can't find the number. i'm seeing a guy later this morning that has a wix transmission filter chart on the wall, and i think that filter is on there. i just called him. for 5/16" line size : #58964 for 7/16" line size : 58963. hope this helps.
