Had a pretty good streak of luck until lastnight - 02/12/09 08:48 PM

Been trying to get the car out to the track for the last several weeks. The last time out (1 month ago) the computers went down and the track had to shut down. Since then a couple of the nights were so cold they canceled TnT.

So last night was pretty nice weather wise. Made my first pass and the car was off ET and MPH somewhat. Enough so to make me wonder what was up. Second pass I did my burnout and the starter stopped me because the guy ahead looked like he was coasting to a stop on the track. I backed up and waited. Got the go ahead and started to do another burnout(start in 2nd always and hit third and power out), this time nothing. it wouldn't spin the tires. I backed up, put it in 1st then 2nd and tried again. this time I heard a loud pop. I backed up and drove back to the pits in 1st and loaded up. No fluid or anything weird looking.

Today I put it up on jack stands and tried to go through the gears. It appears as if there is no 2nd or 3rd gears. It will go in first and reverse. I didn't pull the pan yet cause I didn't have the time to get into it.

What does this sound like to you?

Just guessing......something broke and has the low/reverse band
jammed or the over-running clutch failed.

"What does this sound like to you?"
Sounds like you broke the trans...

I've seen the front band strut fall out, but it still had 3rd .

I had that happen to me before and it ended up being the snap ring holding the clutch pack in broke and fell out.Made a mess of the trans and converter.Hope this is not what you have going on.

Sorry to highjack when someone mentioned it could have broken and went through the floor I thought about what happened to a local racer. He runs a dart with 426 hemi ( turns it over 9000 rpm )and his trans exploded took out the motor and rearend too. Went through the floorpan and parts of the firewall. The trans even had a Kevlar blanket on it.

Chris, hate to hear the news. Hope its simple. At least you didn't oil the track or hurt yourself or the actual car. Good luck . Hope you don't need a whole trans.

I'm assuming it is a MVB. Does it have a LBA?

It does absolutly nothing in 2nd or 3rd but still moves fine in 1st and rev.

Re: Hey !! Bills on a good streak !! - 02/13/09 05:26 AM

It sure sounds like the front band is not working. I have found that alot of times running cars that use a manual valve body with the wheels off the ground it is hard to feel the shifts. I know on mine I could only notice one shift when I was spinning the wheels off the ground. But it shifted fine when I drove it and had all gears. Try putting it into 3rd on the ground to see if it does have 3rd. If it does have 3rd and first you can bet the front band let go. Ron

I'm basing this on the fact that it revved like it was in neutral in second gear while trying to do the burnout. I may drop the pan today before I go to work.

Pulled the trans pan and saw nothing! I was kinda surprised by that. The fluid looked good. A little clutch material in there but that's normal. I then pulled the valve body out and still can't see any physical evidence of anything being wrong with it. I guess it'll have to wait till I can pull the whole trans outa the car and take it apart to see what happened to it

Air check it before you pull it out. Could be in the VB.

I'm gonna end up pulling anyway to rule out everything. Plus I've been meaning to get it out to freshen it. I've been collecting goodies for it including a brake, so I guess no better time than now.

That's weird because the rear clutch is applied in ALL forward gears, so it should still move in 2nd and/or 3rd , just never shift 2nd only applies the front band.

I can't remember what the overrunning clutch is doing in 2nd and 3rd , but it sounds like something is broken .

Re: Hey !! Bills on a good streak !! - 02/13/09 05:42 PM

I don't have my book in front of my but IIRC the over running clutch is not used in 2nd or 3rd.

Re: Hey !! Bills on a good streak !! - 02/13/09 06:02 PM

I'm no tranny guy, but the book says
When the shifter is in reverse:
front clutch is ON
rear clutch is OFF
kick down band is OFF
low reverse band is ON
over running clutch is OFF
..................................
Shifter in manual low
front clutch is OFF
rear clutch is ON
kick down band is OFF
low reverse band is ON

Bummer.... I'm sure Rebel can hook you up with a fresh buildup... That baby is going to launch like a cannon when you hit with the brake...... TBF

Bill, you are correct, the over running clutch is
over running in both 2nd and high gear... this is a
manual valve body.
Reading some of the trouble shooting checks it does
sound like he broke (or blew out) the kick down band
servo. I am thinking it isnt up shifting

Re: Hey !! Bills on a good streak !! - 02/13/09 10:29 PM

Raff , it would always stay in first unless there is a huge pressure loss on the 2nd gear shift that is releasing the rear clutch ????

dc is it not shifting and loosing forward motion once it goes for second or just a no shift issue ?
