Opinions On Push Rod Size for Street Motor - 02/12/09 08:22 PM

OK, I'm getting my motor assembled and have measured my push rod length. What I need to know is if .080 wall, 5/16" diameter rods will do the job or do I need to go to 3/8" . Also most seem to have the oiling feature but my Comp steel rockers have a provision to oil the top of the push rod. The combo is Comp retro hydraulic roller lifters and a comp roller cam with .538 lift. 440 Source heads with 145lbs on the seat and 350lbs open. Street motor with a max rpm of 6K.

You're asking for trouble with the 5/16 pushrod. Go 3/8.

Are those the spring specs called for with that cam? I know it's a street roller but stiil thosae numbers seem pretty low for a roller & nothing will destroy a set of roller lifters faster than to light of a spring... That said I'd run 3/8's pushrods & be aware you'll likely need to clearance the pushrod holes in the heads...

OK, I was a little off on my spring specs. The spring (single) that CompCams calls for with that cam is rated at 111 lbs @ 1.90 (closed), and 388 lbs @ 1.20 (open). My spring set up (duals) as per my machinist is 145 lbs @ 1.875 (closed), and 375 lbs @ 1.335 (open). This is with a max lift of .538int and .534ex .

Those pressures are almost exactly what I used on a hydraulic roller cam in a Hemi motor this past summer, works good. As far as pushrod size 3/8 x.095 is my suggestion
