Dana 60 housing ends - 02/12/09 04:30 AM

Since I got so much help with the 4 link question i asked last week https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/images/icons/frown.gifi thought Id ask another question. Are most of you guys using the factory type 8 3/4 /dana 60 housing ends or are you switching to the ford big bearing type housing end. Thanks Seth

Re: Dana 60 housing ends - 02/12/09 05:56 AM

had my dana narrowed by dutchman and used big ford ends mainly becouse the original bearings were very hard to find and the bolt circle was odd, the doner rear was from a jeep pickup. i used a brake assembly from mid 90's f150..

I used LBF ends on my Dana 60 when I worked a Strange, mostly because of the better bearings that are avalible (timken Taper roller bearings) and the better brake options. You can't go wrong with those ends.

I used the regular passenger ends.

Got them from Dr Diff.

They have worked on millions of 8 3/4's and 9 3/4, so I can't see why they wouldn't work for me.

We used factory 8.75" ends of a bent housing. If I were going to run rear discs I'd use Ford ends.

Re: Dana 60 housing ends - 02/12/09 12:52 PM

big Fords on the Camaro...(has a Dana)(using SVO brakes with center EM drums)

and mopar ends on the Duster..(Aerospace brakes)

the 63 Dodge has a 9" with BOP ends..(I bought the rear built that way, just bought Wilwood backing plates to fit their discs..)

Unless you already had mopar axles, I would use late ford ends. If you step up to 40 spline, the
mopar ends wont work.Cheap explorer disc brakes are a plus.

Re: Dana 60 housing ends - 02/12/09 01:50 PM

this is rear end that you are building from scratch right?

The reason I like the LBF ends is the piece of mind that that Timken Taper bearing gives me. I have had a Green style bearing fail on a car ( a street car but still) and the only thing that kept the axle in was the fender skirts (68 VIP).

The fact that a part was used by Ford,Gm, Toyota or Renault (ok maybe not anything from France ) dosen't make it automatically bad to me, but then again I am not a Mopar purist-more like a mut that likes things that work well and happens to only own Mothers products-for now.

Just had to add and additional

Housing end depends on what type of brakes you want to run.

All popular housing end designs, including Mopar are available for 3.15" (Ford style) ball or tapered wheel bearings.

BTW, Timken tapered wheel bearings failed on my dad's 1/2 ton Ford pickup. There was nothing that kept the axle in the wheel well.

'66 Ford 5-lug Dana 60. It takes Timken Set 7 tapered wheel bearings (same as 8 3/4").

I have also seen this happen several times on 8 3/4" pickup rears. The non sealed design is prone to water contamination.

Interestingly, my Dad's other Ford pickup is still on it's original set of 1965 sealed, ball wheel bearings.

I do like the later model, set 20 tapered wheel bearings, however.

BTT..
Cass, I assume all your brake kits are based off of the mopar end correct?

Does ordering axles with the Ford style tapered bearings cause any fitment issues? I notice most of the aftermarket kits from Wilwood and such list the green bearings as a requirement..

Re: Dana 60 housing ends - 02/23/09 04:36 AM

Timken Set 20 (3.15") wheel bearings interchange on most Mopar axles. I as well as Strange, Dutchman and Mark Williams offer Mopar 3.15" hybrid housing ends.

My brake kits, axles and housing ends are available for std Mopar or 3.15" tapered (Ford) wheel bearings.

Drum brake backing plate ID must be bored to 3.16".

Most other Mopar brake kits only work with std Mopar Green wheel bearings.
