You Can't Make This Stuff Up!

You Can't Make This Stuff Up! - 09/25/16 06:16 PM

Last night at Edgewater they ran the King of the Track, in which the Summit points winners in Super Pro, Pro, and Sportsman make single passes and the best package wins a wally. First up was Prochamp, who won this deal last year with a .009 package (!), this year he was on the negative side with a .005 red and .009 under ET, so by rule he is out.

Next up is Pozest, who rips a .003 on the tree, but his car slows up on him and his package is .035.

The should-be final run was a dragster, which ran dead-on his dial but the driver missed the tree, they announce his package at .033, and we all return to the pits to get ready for first round thinking he is the winner. But no, Edgewater has a knack for quirky things happening, and the announcer says his math was wrong and Pozest and the dragster have actually tied at .035. The printers at Edge only show 3 digits, so they tell them to come back up for another run. The drivers agree to race for it instead of packages. Pozest goes green and takes the win light against a very late-leaving dragster. But wait, we're still not done! The dragster driver is throwing a fit because they forgot to turn on the crosstalk! You can't make this stuff up. So the track owner is there and he calls it a tie and each driver is to get a wally. Congrats to Pozest for the King of the Track!

What is crosstalk? Sounds like one of those cheating electronic thingies. Good for Pozest! Crybaby pissy a$$ dragster.

Crosstalk is standard at all NHRA tracks, it lights both top yellows at the same time, allowing the faster car with a delay box to leave on the slower car's yellow. There are many threads that debate this issue to death, but the facts are that it is standard, so be it. You don't often see a Sportsman class car take out a dragster!

And I thought you were going to show this picture that I found on the net of the latest traction device on a GM car...

Guaranteed, Super Pro has cross talk. Pro, Sportsman, no cross talk.

Well, if your trying to gain an advantage and fail, tough. You lose.

Random timed instant green would solve all the debate. When I used to drag race it always drove me nuts the stupid countdowns, should be you both stage and get a yellow light on then the computer picks a random time to turn on the green and you go, if you go early you redlight and the other guy wins.

None of that really matters. Cut the best light, run closest to your dial.......YOU WIN. It's that simple. Guys worry too much about what the OTHER guy has or is doing.

Why is he a crybaby? If the crosstalk was on all night and that's how his box was set up.......and then it's NOT on, he has a right to complain.

Many don't like crosstalk, but it seems to be fair to me. All delay box cars and going to leave on the top bulb. With both top yellows coming on together, both drivers see the same bulb. What's not fair? In the past, with big spots and no blinders, the fast car KNEW if the slow one went red and could wait on the bulb AND run it flat out. Can't do that with crosstalk

Pozest seemed to have cut a good light, all by himself. And I'm going to guess that he doesn't have half the money in his car that the guy with the dragster does. Like I said, Good For Pozest!

With that setup you leave a huge window of time between when the light comes on and the cars actually leave the beam. You end up with a system where you almost HAVE to guess at the tree, and do it better than the other guy. It takes out skill and replaces it with luck. I expect that's why we have the countdown tree, so you can get your reaction times near zero.

It seems to me they could have done the math and calculated what his package would have been WITH the x-talk on.

None of that is relevant. It's a Super pro car, meaning it has a box and that's how he races. If the tree is not the same as it has been all night, that's not right.

Delay boxes don't automatically make you good on the tree. You still have to catch the bulb consistently and get off the button
