727 Torqueflite Troubles - 09/15/16 12:38 AM

Hey guys,

Got the car back together and been having some issues with it, looking to see if any of you guys have an idea on what it could be.

At first I had it where I let go of the trans brake, it has this weird spinning feeling (Maybe slipping?). Car isn't spinning, but thats what it feels like off the line. Compare it to what it feels like to be low on trans fluid. Rev and First gear don't really go anywhere, but 2nd and 3rd work just fine. I tried to put the car back in the trailer in REV and it wouldn't even go up the ramps. Trans brake will also hold if I push it and let the car idle, but as soon as I floor it and it comes up against the 2 step the car starts to creep forward. I got a good 12v to the solenoid. Shifter was adjusted in neutral and was working correctly before. Trans is from Joe at Tranzact.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Craig

guess at that point I'd be dropping the pan and taking a look at the bands, especially the L/R one. In my experience if it's slipping that bad you'll usually notice the fluid smell. if the bands look 'ok" I'd probably drop the valve body out and air check the servos and clutches.

1st and Rev both need the L/R band. Make sure it didn't break the ear off the band, crack the servo piston, or just flat out of adjustment. you can air check if the valve body is dropped. Piston can be changed in the car, not the band.

Low band apply ? If not the first thing is the Sprag is toast, otherwise as mentioned the rear band has a problem , but even if low band apply and the rear band had an issue the car should still move in low , sprag is TOAST ...

DO NOT DRIVE it till you inspect the trans, DROP THE PAN ....

Did you break the rear or driveshaft recently ?

Nope, rear end and driveshaft are brand new. Have had zero issues with that. If I end up doing an air check and everything looks ok, it'll point to the sprag needed to be replaced correct?

**EDIT: Now that I think of it, it started doing it after my line lock decided not to work and I did a burnout just flooring it after the rear tires were wet. The car was on the rev limiter (6500) for maybe 4-5 seconds. This was in 2nd gear.

2nd gear wouldn't hurt the sprag , did you start in 2nd , or shift to second?

Sprage would not prevent reverse from functioning.

No it wouldn't, but it would prevent forward motion as he claims because the rear band does not need to be applied for that.

Yep, I definitely started in second. Going to drop the pan this weekend and remove the valve body and do an air test.

One question about doing an air test, when I put air into the different circuits, what am I looking for? Listening for air leaks? No movement in the bands?

Also any way to check the condition of the sprag with the pan dropped or will the whole trans need to be disassembled to check that?

Thanks again guys. Learning a bunch over here.

trans needs removed to inspect sprag... about the last piece you'll get to.

I it didn't hold, reverse would function if the band and high clutch were engaged. If it was jammed holding the drum it would back up but not function in 2nd or 3rd do to tie up. What am I missing?

Drained the pan today, fluid reaked of burnt clutch with the infamous brown color. Thats the end of my season. Thank you all for the info, but the more issues I have with this thing, the more I look to just saying screw it and put a powerglide in it...

Thanks again guys, Craig

Baloney, yank it and let's see what's wrong. I disassembled mine and reassembled it 3 days ago, assembled and back in the car in a few hours. I'll be racing tomorrow. We can help.
