Drag Radial Wear Pattern

Alright drag radial guys...I need some help to know if my set up is OK

M/T 275-60s with 13 passes in picture. Running 17 PSI, CalTracs/Monos. Calvert shocks on middle (5) setting. About 550 HP, with a trans brake.

Is this a normal pattern?

Am I hitting the tire too hard? Not hard enough?

What is your experience?

The concern, though hard to see, is the tire is really roughed up.

The change seems to have started when I first started using the trans brake.

Any ideas?

Completely normal. Do you street drive it? You're not going to be able to tell anything by tread pattern at all.

Have you treid running both more and less air pressure? I would if you haven't Not every tire gauge read exactly the same, pump those rascals up until the 60 ft get worst, same thing on running less air pressure I ran several sets of M/T ET Street Radials, not the newer Pro radials, and my wear patter was similar That was a foot brake car that ran low tens with 18 lbs on my TIRE gauge It didn't like 17.0 lbs and it didn't like 22 or more pressure according to the time slips back then
That was in my old pump gas Duster weighing 3450 lbs with me in it, that motor made 727 HP on Oregon 91 octane pump swill the last time it was on a DTS engine dyno in Klamath Falls Oregon at 4300 ft elevation Without looking at my log books I'm going to say the best 60 ft on that car was 1.42 The new lighter faster car runs 1.27 range on the sixty foots on the trans brake Powerglide, it was a lot harder on my back until I started remembering to push myself back into the seat before letting go of the T.B. button

Tried a few runs today. First with same set-up - blew the tires off.

Softened the extend setting on shocks two clicks (#2), and was going to drop to 16PSI.

But a battery issue kept me from making a second pass.

Yes, I do drive it to/from track, so I needed to go, with out shutting off.

I will try again in a couple of weeks.

What's the car weigh? I'd start at 18ish. a double adjustable rear shock should be in your future.


They will get chewed up like pictured with street driving.

The car with me in it is about 3550.

Double adjustable rears are in this winter's plan.

I did not notice the chewed up pattern until after the last set of passes. This was when I first started using the trans brake. Before was foot braking.

Street driving is a a few short runs to cruises, and three- 50 mile round trips to the track.

Mine never looked that chewed up from street use and foot-brake launches. I, too, believe the trans brake is responsible.

I tried running BFG drag radials on my former '68 Charger, 440/4 speed car. It wore in a similar pattern if I was driving it hard.

275/60 on an 8" wheel.
11.20s - 11.40s at 3800#, foot braking, with 17.5 psi cold.
30 passes & about 80 street miles on them.

My hoosier DR's looked similar after some street testing...I wouldn;t worry unless performance is effected.

Are they the new ET Street S/S's? how do you like them?

We had Hoosier DRs on the car when we bought it. They struggled to hook, but were a little old and did not have much "tread" on them.

The new ET Street S/Ss work pretty well. I never had the old version so I do not have a comparison.

Neither DRs match the 60 foot of ET of the car when it is on 10.5 x 30" radial slicks.
