I'm just fitting a Dana in my Dart and just wondered if i should move it back a little to gain a touch more clearance on the front of the wheel arch. I've got to have a new propshaft made and will have to make and fit new front spring hangers. I'm thinking around 1/2" so's not to push the angle of the shackles back to far.
Is this plausible and who has done it.

mine is back 1" (but I have ladder bars now)
You can leave the springs where they are and redrill the spring perch to move it back your desired amount.

Put a spacer in front of the spring hanger, 1/2" alum.
I hope your drive shaft was a touch long

The car sits a little high at the back, at present, there's around 1" clearance from the front of the tyre to the wheel arch, as it is, i'm thinking if i lower it down it might rub unless i push it back a touch, what's the most i could realistically get away with. The springs are already moved into the rails.

Would it be a bit easier to just trim the
leading edge of the rear wheel well openings?

I moved the rear end back 1/2" on my 69 Dart, also lowered it 3/4".

That dana sticks out a little more out back, do you have room to clear the fuel tank?

I set mine back 1.5 inches to gain tire clearance in the front of the wheel arch,also give yourself enought to compensate for tire growth at higher speed's.

Me, I want as much rear overhang (weight bias) as possible.
I'd cut the front wheel lip.
It'll also give the car better visual proportions, if aesthetics matter.
The front yoke of the driveshaft should have as much support (spline engagement) without bottoming out as you can give it.
That said, I moved the rearend back 1/2" on my Duster street car to fit big tires; made some spacers that I slid between the ft hangers and their chassis brackets.

I dont want to cut the lip because i've not long had a nice paint job, also everything is out at the moment anyway, ready for the new axle, the front hangers were not made by me, and only have a single hole, so i might make new hangers, move the hole back and raise it up a little, also add another hole at the same time. My main worry is the angle of the rear shackles, with the old axle the bottoms point slightly to the rear, obviously, if the axle is pushed back then the shackles will move back more.
Can it be done by redrilling the perches?.

not to highjack the post, but what about moving the pearch forward, shorting the front spring segment,has anyone ever done that? i'm running ss springs in an a body and i got carried away when i opened up my wheel wells and would like to close the gap a little at the front of the tire. my concern is if this would affect the spring rate etc adversely with a shorter front segment. any opinions? dave

I moved mine forward one inch to center the wheels and tires in the center of the wheelwells and make the appearancs more appealing
That was after movig the the front lip forward three inches and the rears back two inches, get out your stretching machines and go for it

The tires above are 28x13.5.
Moving the tires back didn't make sense to me.

MT ET Streets 30x13.5x15 on a 10 inch rim. My Dart is mini-tubbed. Leaf springs moved into frame rail.

Is that the width including the tyre bulge on the rim, my 10.5 MT's measure just over 13" at their widest point.

thanks for the answer mike! now, i will be lenghtening the rear segment is that going to cause problem in you opinion? soften the spring rate? since it's for cosmetics basiclly, i don't want to create problems! thanks again, dave
