Steering column with removable wheel.

Steering column with removable wheel. - 06/22/16 01:50 AM

Since I've got my whole interior apart redoing the wiring and putting my dash in from Chris Costanza. I was thinking about removing the original steering column and putting just a shaft in with a removable wheel.

What have you guys used to do this? I see kits available but I feel I can source the parts much cheaper if I get the steel from the place down the road and buy the ends I need.

Is there something in between the two shafts to act as a bearing? Also how did you guys mount your steering columns.

This is what I use...I dont like the push button
one... you can put a bushing or bearing just below
the disconnect ... I put a oil light bushing there..
there is a male and female spline that fits 3/4" shaft..
you lift up(towards the driver) on the black ring to
take the wheel off.... just give a pull on it each time
you go to the line.... thrust me...I didnt push it on all
the way ONCE... the wheel came off.. I got it back on at
about 130 mph... its nice to have a car drive straight

On my 72 satellite I used the kit from Chris Alston, just cut to fit and weld on the ends for the joints, and done

Are the pins are to get off? Or do you just prefer the locking ring? Looked at quite a few pictures on Google image after a few tries to find what I'm looking for. Looks like a lot of guys just use 2 carrier bearings one on each end. I figured it was more complicated than that lol.

The single pin ones are the release button... same as the
ring on mine... but the pin style you push the button and
pull the wheel... on mine I pull the ring and pull the wheel..
I just liked the looks of the ring style.. plenty of guys
like the pin version... on mine that alum plate is a adapter
to mount the steering wheel.. I used a 10" odd ball wheel...
most steering wheels will mount directly on

I dont have a quick release wheel but I went with one of these columns in my A-body and it fits nearly perfect and allows any GM quick release to work.

I don't want a full column. I want something along these lines. Getting rid of weight lol

A lot of those race columns are just an aluminum tube, two delron bushings and a cro mo shaft.
Try Behlings in Butler. They probably have one, and they are local. You can put your hands on it and see if it's what you need.

I just bought a kit, it came with mild steel tubes. I tossed the tubes out and replaced with thinner moly

I'll just stick to stock manual column. It's not heavy at all and still has signals and horn button. Seens way to many crashes due to removable wheels for my taste.
