Returning incorrect part from Hughes, what to expect?

Returning incorrect part from Hughes, what to expect? - 06/20/16 12:59 AM

Hey all.

I was hoping to be installing my custom 3 bolt whiplash cam from Hughes this weekend.

Found a single bolt cam in the box as soon as I opened the end of the protective bag.

I sent Hughes an email with my issue. Tried to call in hopes there would also be voice mail, but no such luck.

So far any dealings with Hughes prior to, and during the order were all pleasant. Hopefully they can get my the correct cam without difficulties. However while pulling up return info for Hughes they seem to say they wont pay shipping on any returns. I'm hoping this doesn't include parts they shipped incorrectly. There are some interesting return stories on some other forums that popped up.

So has anyone here had to make a return for a wrong part, and how did it go, or what should I be expecting when I call Monday?

As luck would have it, today is day 10 or the disclaimer that says any discrepancies must be reported within 10 days.

I'm hoping this goes smoothly, I dont need a bunch of trouble just before I go in for surgery.

Just call Dave or Kevin and tell them what happened.I can't say whether they will pay shipping or not but if the error was on their part I would hope they step up and take care of it.

I had an issue with a lifter failing years ago and they took care of me when they did not have to.

You shouldn't have any problem with a return like that with Hughes. Are you sure you called the right number, they always had an answering machine/voicemail ?

Now I'll ask the dumb question , what's the need for a 3 bolt timing chain with a hyd. cam ... other than you got a smoking deal on a chain set at a swap meet that you couldn't pass up wink .. ????

I just hope there is a way you can prove you wanted
a 3 bolt... because you did say custom...and I am sure
they wont take a custom part back UNLESS you can prove
they built it wrong.... I just ordered a custom cam from
them on Friday

Just got a call from Hughes. I believe the persons name was James.

They are working on finding my camshaft. He recalled the order. since it was not typical to get a 3 bolt order on a whiplash cam designed for a stock engine. LOL

I want to build a daily driver friendly engine that sounds like a mean race motor. So the 3 bolt is to run gear drive.

Anyway. They are working hard to figure out what happened. And they are promising to fix this as soon as they can. So I am happy right now. Even if it takes a few more weeks they are fine with shipping the cam to a friend since I will be in the hospital.

I understand that. But luckily my invoice clearly states 3 bolt camshaft on it.

Its to run the gear drive.

I am building a street motor that sounds like a race motor. Using mostly leftover race engine parts I had from my past 383, 440, and 451 engines.

This one is going to be a 9:1 383, with the whiplash cam, gear drive, a nicely worked set of 906 heads, and an M1 dual 4bbl tunnel ram.

I spoke with Hughes prior to ordering the cam, and per his recommendation I am using the 440 cam grind rather than the 383 cam grind since I plan to use dual 4 tunnel ram.

This is just going to be a cruise to town, Sunday driver, with the occasional trip to the 1/8 mile track for fun "run what you brung" events.

That sounds like a great build for an intimidating cruiser!!

I had to return some custom made parts for the Ramcharger once. I had 35 spline axles made by Dutchman for the Dana 60. They put 2" inch studs in the axles and I had ordered 3" on their form. The sent a UPS Call tag and picked them up, they came back a few days later with 3" long screw in studs in place. Those fit the Weld Pro Star wheels perfectly, but I ended up with CenterLine Warriors because I had measured the housing width wrong and had too much offset to clear the wheel well outer lip. It would have cut the slicks the first time they were in use. So I went to the swap section of Moparts and found a member in PA that had the right set of wheels with 5" back spacing at a good price, we made the deal and now I have more stud exposed than I need because the Warriors have a thinner center than the Pro Stars. Better too much, than not enough!!

They sent the call tag, and gave me a call today to let me know they are grinding a new cam, and plan to have it shipped out yet this week!

I am very satisfied.
