Hughes performance convertors any good?

Going to have to rebuild trans in my diesel. Stock truck, just want better than stock stuff going back in. Hughes sells diesel convertors for about 650 that would appear better than stock, but im sure arent as good as the 12-1300 ones. The stocker lasted 260k, so as long as these arent junk it shoukd be fine.

Never used one in anything, neither have people I know. Anybody run their stuff before?

bought my triple disc from Dave Goerend even though he only suggested a single disc for my application (towing). That was so long ago I don't even think about my trans in my 01 when I leave town. Had to upgrade the valve body too.

I dont know, it's for a ford. Just wondering about the company's products in general. I picked up a stalker on here for over 5 years just for saying a ford was fine over in that forum. Not kidding, so couple that with the ones that think the old dodges are worth a ton that dont like me for that, well, im just looking for general info. I have a post on a ford site. I'm surprised you're not finding more on Hughes. They have been around a long time and are sold through Summit so there are probably tons of them out there.

I had one, bought through Summit, which was an 11" 3000 stall for 727. It worked very well, no excessive slip, accelerated nice. I had to change it out when I went to a bigger cam which needed more RPM.

I have one of their transmissions in my Charger. Local for me. Nice people, transmission runs great, and they gave me a deal on a "refresh/inspection" when I broke a u-joint. If I ever need a transmission in my Diesel, I would use them.

I wouldn't bother with an aftermarket converter. It's a stock engine correct? You can have the transmission rebuilder send your tc in and have it rebuilt. As long as the tc rebuilder is using the correct friction material, and knows how to properly adhere it, you should be fine for another 260K.

I would pay close attention to what the transmission rebuilder is doing to extend the life of the transmission.

Which transmission? 4R100, 5R110W, E4OD, or Torqushift?
Year make and model?

Thanks guys. E40d. 97 f350. Going with the trans go tugger kit for some tweaks to the VB etc while down. The convertor is a total weak link in that trans and im not surprised to be having trouble after pushing it hard with towing in the past year or two.

I run a bigger cooler and syn fluid. Ive had a couple of these trucks and do seem to get ok life from the auto.

What about a new Ford part? I am impressed with the vehicles I have from them. An example is the clutch out of my 06 GT. I put a blower on it and at 7psi it makes a ton more grunt, and the stock clutch never gave me a lick of trouble for 50,000 HARD miles with that blower.

There is a company near me called Rev Max. Make a lot of their own products for HD automatic use. I know a lot of guys run their valve bodies and converters for the Dodge diesels. Good prices, too. Might be worth a call to find out about Ford products.

build for a Cummings they would build for any trans

So there are a few converter upgrades for the E4OD. There's a superior clutch plate made by LUK that should be used.It has heavy duty twin dampner springs and more friction material. There are a few modifications to the TCC exhaust hole in the stator body. The exhaust hole should be enlarged to .076-.086". The drain hole for the pump bushing should be enlarged to 5/16". The stator body can be modified for full-time lube as well. This info is probably in the Trans-go kit.

This didnt work out. The convertor had a weld pinch the lockup clutch and failed right away. Caused me all sorts of trouble this summer.

Hughes ended up finding the problem. Too bad they didnt want to send me a new one when the shop and I concluded the convertor was junk. They also didnt want to cover the return shipping, neither with a call tag or reimbursing me when they found the issue. I do get all warm and fuzzy when I think about the customer service rep there telling me they normally send a new one to swap, but even though that was one of three, yes three foul ups they committed on this, they still wouldnt do a damn thing for me. He also admitted a call tag should've been sent, but again, that's just my tough luck they dropped the ball on that part and I would get no love on any of this.

I calmly explained i wasnt mad and i understand this sort of thing happens, but for me to take a total, and i mean total loss on this was an obscene injustice. After much pleading on my part, they took a few days and decided they would sell me a convertor at cost(supposedky 200 off) so they wouldnt go out of pocket. Even though they supposedly cover shipping on this sort of thing and werent sure how i got the shaft. I suppose they send out a lot of duds so taking care of me would push the company into bankruptcy.

Worst of all, i got a taste of what the truck should've always been like. The oem stall speed is WAY too high. The convertor was spot on and made the trans feel like myself and others always wanted it to. Problem is, the shop is super busy and when the spot in line came open, it was a rebuilt stocker or nothing. Wish i had just purchased another brand to stick in there, but it snuck up on me and i have had a busy year moving among other things.

So basically if you want a convertor that might be bad OOTB, no part to swap right back in while down to remove their junk, and no return shipping for their junk part, Hughes Performance in AZ can hook you up with all that.

I did not have good luck with them either.

Ordered a lockup converter for my 44RH, gave them all the detailed specs of the engine, trans, cam, usage, etc.

Converter one came in: No ring gear on the converter.

Converter two came in: Stock stall.

Called and complained and was told "oh just pull it out and ship back, you need "max stall" option" due to cam.

WTH? You had all this info up front and sound like you pulled a random converter off the shelf. Sad as I have had good luck with them before.

I have a Hughes convertor, been using it for eight years with probably 80 plus runs at the track. Have not had a problem yet. This is in my 11.50 Scamp.
