How fast will it run?

How fast will it run? - 05/13/16 05:58 PM

Here's my 360 set up

Stock bore and Piston 360 1980 truck motor
Comp 275DEH
Stock heads, intake, and everything
4160 Holley converted to 4150 vac secondary
Manual shifted 727
2400 stall converter
3.23 sure grip
29x10.5 rear slicks
3200 lbs short box pick up

What would be the cheapest most effective upgrade? I know the gears are holding me back pretty bad and I'm looking for some used at the moment

Your really nothing more than stock... best upgrade would
be to spray it... cheapest thing in the long run

Gear and an intake is where I would start. After that I'd try a simple home port and valve job.

Headers and intake, port and polish.

Hopefully you upgraded the valve springs to go along with that cam.

With a completely untested combo, the first outing could go a few different ways.
And a lot of the performance potential of any given combination often comes down the skill level of the one wrenching on it.

Based on that, I think it should run somewhere between 14.50 and 15.50.

I have open headers on it. Yes my valve springs match the camshaft. My list of upgrades as the money comes in are 1. Gears 2. Intake 3. Heads or head work maybe next year will disassemble and look at some domed forged Pistons

Track is an 1/8 mile and gonna run the street et class this year

I had a similar combo in my Dart ages ago. 3.23's but with a 26" tire.

Ran 15.4 with cast manifolds, RV cam, 4bbl iron intake and a 600 holley.
Ran 14.0 with headers, LD340, and summit .441 cam

Later ran high 12's with home ported heads, XE268, and higher compression.
Ran 12.16 @ 116 with a .047 pill in a plate

I would hold off on gears if you actually plan to drive it, and suggest the following, not necessarily in order:

intake
head work
N2O/Ebay turbo

As for now...9.80 in the 1/8

No plans on driving it on the street. It's gutted out with a race seat and homemade dash and a fuel cell

Remove front sway bar. Relocate battery. What size carb do you have. More than likely, a 1" 4 hole spacer will help throttle response. Good second hand 3,000 stall converter. Gears, if strictly race, and 1/8 mile.

Re: How fast will it run? - 05/14/16 06:19 AM

No front sway bar 600 vac secondary Holley battery is relocated no inner fenders 1/2 inch carb spacer converter was a 3500 stall but that was used and doesn't stall behind my combo as much as it did behind the other guys. And gears are waiting for more money to rebuild

Unless somebody has a ready to go set with a sure grip for a great deal

What converter is it you have? An increase in stall from a well built converter will help. Find out if it is lower stall than a stock type 340 converter, and if it is, that might be a cheap upgrade.

Carb is good size but should be swapped for a double pumper. 3 keyway timing kit, install cam on advance setting. Disconnect vacuum advance, install lightweight spring kit and set full timing 32-36. Bolt a 12-18" tailpipe on the back of the headers.

Not sure on the brand but it's an aftermarket smaller neutral balance (running with a weighted b&m flex plate, before somebody says something about it) I do need to time the cam right now it is in there as it came with a double roller timing chain. Timing is set at 21 initial and 37 total I believe. With vac advance hooked up.

Honestly I built this engine back in early 2015 and just broke it in 4 months ago. All of my part choices were what I had in the garage at the time. My biggest complaint on hoe it runs now even after accelerator pump tuning is it is sluggish off the line but 3500 she takes off decent till about 5500

This. I ran a factory "high stall" 340 converter with the external balanced weight...stalled to ~2400 behind by mild 360.

Swapped to a used 10" ATI and saw virtually no gains...

You might want to advance that cam 4* or more to help with
low end torque especially with the gear and the conv in it now

Thank you Mr P. I may look into it after the first race. Never timed a cam in anything other than a diesel before so it will be a learning experience. But she has been a learning experience since day one lol

Well gears are a very big hold back right now and not much more than a stock car at the moment. She ran a very consistent 9.8 all weekend

I've swap gears in a Duster with a similar 360 pump gas motor, went from 3.55 to 4.89 and the stupid car didn't change much in ET in the 1/4 mile shock shruggy It felt a bunch faster but the ET slip didn't show it work shruggy

Do I win anything?

Congrats on the first outing, consistency is key!
