I don't think Larry Carrier had started IHRA that early, maybe 1975 or later AHRA was in business as well as PDRA, Professional Drag Racers Association, and maybe a few other small regionnal drag race track owners associations, but not IHRA that early I think

IHRA was founded in November 1970 according to Wikipedia. Earliest champions were Wayne Gapp in '74, Don Nicholson in '75, and Bob Glidden in '76.

Bret is a walking encyclopedia of racing information, but that doesn't make you the greatest guy to call a race. The average person doesn't care about the technical or want a history lesson. They want to be entertained. Bret aint all that entertaining as a race announcer. Heard him many times

Pretty sure Ronnie Sox won the Pro Stock championships in 71. Not positive about 72, but it think it was Grump in his Vega.

Never had any trouble with Bret, but I did run afoul of Animal Jim once. I haven't seen Jim on there for awhile though.
