Zerex G-05 Coolant Leak Cleanup - 05/06/16 07:41 AM

Anyone have a good solution for removing chalky residue from dried Zerex G-05 coolant leaks? My thermostat housing gasket leaked and Zerex G-05 coolant 50/50 mix got sprayed everywhere by the radiator fan, love it. Just using water and a rag is not working to get rid of the dried on chalky residue. Something easy on the engine paint and body paint is needed. Would Simple Green or a solution of Cascade dishwashing detergent work? Any good solutions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I like to use Go-Jo hand cleaner(without the grit) with different size paint brushs to do under hood detailing on all our cars. I wipe it off with a dry rag or sometimes Murphy's oil soap mixed with hot water and hand wipe. I never spray water on any under hood components.

Thanks for the reply. I'll give both suggestions a try. If anyone else has some good solutions for cleaning G-05 coolant mess, please add a note. Thanks.

Just call the hotline at Zerex. If they don't have an answer they can tell you some of the ingredients of it. Look at the container. If it's glycol based then try 70% rubbing alcohol. Alcohol is a good solvent and the 30% is water which is also a good solvent and an ingredient. It won't hurt the paint.

I called the Valvoline (Zerex) hotline number. They recommended for removing antifreeze leak residue, using a solution of powdered dishwasher detergent (like Cascade) in warm water, along with a soft bristle brush to agitate. So, I guess I try that, and maybe the Murphy Oil Soap later if the the dishwasher detergent does not do the trick.

Water wetter has the same caustic ingredients as dishwasher detergent. It can remove paint. What you might be seeing is mineral deposits or a caustic. It probably has etched the paint. Wash with 50% water and vinegar and a tooth brush. If you still get halos just wipe over with a little plumbers grease(silicone grease) and it will look less noticeable.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll start with the 50% vinegar and water and brush to start with, seems the least invasive. Then if that does not work, maybe use some Murphy's oil soap, then maybe..palmolive dish soap in a weak watered out solution.
