Used rings - 04/26/16 03:30 AM

I have a set of rods and pistons w/rings that I bought a few years back. When I bought them the person told me that they had only made a few runs and could reuse them. At the time I didn't think much about it. Now years later and just wanting to get the 64 back on the road I am considering just using the parts. What do you guys think. Will it automatically create a problem etc. I would like to keep them and I don't have the money to throw into my r block to do all the machining. 4 bolt caps, line hone, squaring it up, and lifter bushing. I have a 360 that should get me by with 4 inch stroke, w5 heads, around 10.5 compression je pistons, eagle rods, and an old comp .609 lift roller. Could get it running for The cost of boring it out and pushrods.

If it were me, id pop for even a budget set of new rings. On top of that what about the ring gaps as well as other factors.

It would just suck to do all that and have to pull it down due to lack of good ring seal.

Ebay has some good deals on rings from decent sellers...

Look at them under a magnifier. Do they have vertical scratches? does the face show over 50% wear? Are they moly faced (silver color in the middle of the ring)? If they pass I'd use them. Your not trying to build a Pro-Stocker. How many motors are run with a turbo out of the junk yard with 100K on them? Same with good used bearings. If it was a high dollar race motor the answer would be different.

They have no real time on them. If they work out it would give me time to build a better short block. I can use my r block and get a 4.25 stroke crank.
